How to Have a Happier New Year

New YearNo doubt we have all heard the masses preparing for the huge New Year’s rush of resolutions. Many of our peers, friends and family members will be highly motivated for all of five days past the first day of January. So the question remains, “How do we go past a feeling into an intentional transformation?” I believe the answer resides in the understanding that life is not a puzzle to be solved, but rather a journey to be embraced.

The reality is, wherever we found ourselves this year was a direct result of the patterns we created long ago. So… if we continue into this next year with that same mentality, we cannot expect anything different. Life gives back to us what we sow as a seed into it. This can come in the form of sacrifice, self-discipline or even servitude toward others. The absolute difference between a good person and a great person is their willingness to give of themselves. We have had it backward for years. You don’t get ahead by stepping on others or mastering the art of manipulation; you get ahead by finding your noble cause and seeking to solve it. How powerful our world could be if we all gave our energy toward a purpose that will relieve the suffering of others.

John Maxwell said, “Many aren’t winning because they just don’t know why they’re losing.” The moral of this quote is until we recognize the small behaviors that are causing us to stumble we will never attain true success. We all have blind spots, those areas we just can’t see affecting us. If you’ve ever seen a huge semi-tractor trailer maneuvering in tight areas, you will have also seen someone outside the truck lending their guidance. We all need those “spotters” who are willing to watch our back as we navigate life’s issues.

I want to share a few simple, yet powerful tweaks we all can make to ensure a happier new year.  Not just a year of failed resolutions, but one that has the power to hold more progress than the previous one.

  • Start by pursuing things that are important to you: The old saying goes, “The man who chases two rabbits catches neither.” I’ve found this true in my life time and time again. Often we pride ourselves with being a Jack of All Trades. But in reality, until we master a skill set, we will never cross the threshold of extraordinary. The world is waiting for your authentic contribution. Once you realize that your gift is to serve someone else, life takes on a new perspective. Think about anyone legendary and almost synonymous with their name is something they became a master at. In a society plagued with distractions, we must strive to turn down the noise levels and concentrate our efforts on one task at a time.
  • New YearEngage in the moment you are in, not the one you wish you had: Have you noticed how we never seem to appreciate where we are right now. We are either worried about the moments to come or buried in grief from the ones that have already expired. Time has literally become our sworn enemy. Nothing is savored, yet everything is taken in haste. When do we slow down? Definitely not while we sleep. Our final thoughts are controlled by technology and guess what we reach for as soon as our eyes open. Take a moment to celebrate your current level of blessings. Remember this, while you waste time with negative thoughts you are wasting valuable time embracing your true destiny. Life will throw you every opportunity to be down, but you have to choose this moment to be up!
  • Find what frees your creativity and value it at all cost: For most, their creativity has been denied for so long it is almost unrecognizable by its owner. Life, in general, has a way of piling layer after layer of crap on us until we are no longer seeking to use our gifts and talents. Instead, we get lost in making a living. How backward is that? We should be operating from a perspective of having our creativity making the way for our lives. For some its music, others work with meditation. Whatever releases your creative flow must be found and utilized NOW. The world is waiting for your contribution to history.

The only thing that is going to make this coming year any better than all the others is the new behavior you are willing to put into practice. We cannot afford to fall victim to the lie that life will change because we have had enough of the pain. That’s just false! Life responds to action. It gets better when we know better, and more importantly, do better. Unleash the power of transformation in your life today and secure a better year and a happier new year.  The choice is yours….Make it happen.
