Diana Orrock has declared her candidacy for Assembly District 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She filed her application with the Clark County Registrar on March 9, 2016. The Nevada primary is scheduled for June 14. The newly-declared candidate’s District stretches from West Flamingo to Blue Diamond and west of East Durango. Orrock bills herself as “a candidate that tells it like it is!”
A 53-year resident of Las Vegas, Orrock has seen the valley grow from a mobster’s oasis in its beginnings to what is now frequently called the “Entertainment Capital of the World.” As someone who has been a part of politics in Nevada since the early ’90s, she is a “true fiscal conservative.” She believes that the Federal government should have a minimal role in the day-to-day life of Nevadans. Intent upon mirroring the can-do spirit of the founding fathers, Orrock wants to bring an element of “frontier self-responsibility” to the country as well as inspire future generations.
She attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), earning two degrees. Orrock was hired by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as the first female criminalist in 1975 and later went on to become a pediatric registered nurse and nursing educator at University Medical Center (UMC) and Sunrise Children’s Foundation, respectively. She became politically involved in the ’90s and worked on both of George W. Bush’s campaigns locally. She also joined the Nevada Republican Party Central Committee. As she declares her candidacy for Assembly District 9, and proudly calls herself a member of the Tea Party.
As a Nevada State Republican committeewoman, Orrock fully supports the Second Amendment, backing the idea that those who hold concealed carry weapon licenses should be allowed to carry their weapons on a school campus. She believes that licensed and responsible gun owners should be able to carry their weapons and protect themselves and their loved ones in all instances.
She also supports eliminating the Common Core Standard in the Clark County School District. She explains on her website that she believes local education money should benefit the child, starting with changes to the Educational Savings Account Program (ESA) of 2015. She particularly wants to change the mandate that requires private and home-schooled children to attend public school for 100 days prior to receiving their ESA.
The long-time Nevadan disagrees with the concept that businesses and residents are under-taxed and the state government is underfunded, believing instead that the budget issues are due to overspending. As a Conservative, declaring her candidacy for Assembly District 9, Orrock opposes the largest tax increase in Nevada’s history, stating that taxing residents and small businesses in order to achieve fiscal abundance is impossible.
In the primary, Orrock intends to defeat incumbent Assemblyman David Gardner (R). He was first elected to the Assembly in November of 2014. Gardner faces a steep battle as he campaigns against Orrock, who is a purposeful, no-holds-barred conservative who intends to approach her bid for candidacy by drawing upon her years of serving the Valley.
