Former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith, who recently was shot and killed, allegedly had a firearm in his possession. This afternoon, April 12, 2016, sportswriter Andrew Schuster posted a tweet and the Associated Press (AP) reported that Smith was in possession of a gun at the time of the shooting.

The New Orleans Police department revealed that a 9 mm gun was found in the car that the victim was driving. It was fully loaded. There have been no indications whether or not he had a permit for the firearm.

Smith, who was a defensive end for the Saints, was killed on Saturday, April 10, 2016, in New Orleans. The incident reportedly occurred after a traffic accident. The alleged shooter was identified as Cardell Hayes.

Earlier today, AP also reported that a video existed showing showed a minor collision between two vehicles; one belonging to the victim and the other was being driven by the alleged shooter. The rear-end “bump,” as it was described, resulted in an escalation of events with the purported shooter in his car chasing after a departing player. Hayes then rammed the player’s SUV. The final altercation ensued, which ended with the shooting.
