On Thursday morning, April 6, 2017, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, a Republican from California, stated he is temporarily removing himself from the investigation of Russia interfering with the 2016 election.

The Republican faulted the filed complaints with the Office of Congressional Ethics. These grievances regarded Nunes’ choice to brief President Donald Trump about the intelligence interception of dialogs, during the election, between a campaign aid for Trump and officials in Russia, as reported by Politico at 9:35 a.m. ET.

In an interesting turn of events, there is now an ongoing investigation into the person who was doing the investigating. Evidently, Nunes resigned without notifying the committee first. With the serious allegations concerning his decision on reporting to Trump, the House Ethics Committee is considering the situation as well, according to several sources. Nunes blamed his decision to step down on opposing political groups.

He stated that the action he was taking to remove himself is in “the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress.” Nunes will remain the Intelligence Committee chairman. However, the Russian investigation will be continued by Rep. Michael Conaway, R-Texas; Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C.; and Rep. Tom Rooney, R-Fla.

The Intelligence panel’s chief Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, responded that the decision, made by Nunes to step down, will give the committee the chance to take a new start in its Russian examination, noting, “We need to get fully back on track.”

Standing in alliance with Nunes, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said he feels Nunes will ultimately prove to the House Ethics Committee he did not do anything misguided and followed the laws. Ryan also stated he agreed, the ethics inquiry involving the chairman would serve as a disruption for the Russian election probe being conducted by the House Intelligence Committee.
