The BBC has reported that June Whitfield, known to the television audiences for the role she portrayed in ‘Absolutely Fabulous,’ has died. She was 93-years old. It is unknown the cause of her death.
Whitfield’s brilliant career in entertainment spanned over six decades.
The actress was a regular in Absolutely Fabulous In 1992, playing the mum Edina Monsoon played by Jennifer Saunders.
AbFab ran for five seasons and returned to the air for three 20th-anniversary specials in 2011 and 2012. Whitfield last played her famous character in 2016’s feature-length movie ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie.’
Prior to Absolutely Fabulous, Whitfield played a co-starring role as Rose Garvey in the British tv comedy entitled ‘Beggar My Neighbour. The series ran from 1966-1968.
She also starred with Terry Scott in two shows. Happy Ever After ran from 1974–1978 and the popular Terry and June which ran from 1979–1987.
The Actress recent television credits included multiple episodes of Doctor Who, You, Me and the Apocalypse, and EastEnders.
The actress played either the wife or the girlfriend to many actors such as Benny Hill, Dick Emery, Frankie Howerd, Tony Hancock, Sid James, Jimmy Edwards, Ted Ray, Stanley Baxter, Leslie Phillips, Bob Monkhouse, Harry H Corbett, Tommy Cooper, Leslie Crowther, Terry Thomas, and Ronnie Barker. The writer Barry Took jokingly stated said that Whitfield supported more actors than the entire Department of Health and Social Security.
She also appeared on the radio in multiple shows lending her voice to the character of Miss Marple for the BBC Radio 4 adaption of Agatha Christie. She was Eth to Ron played by Dick Bentley’s in Take It from Here. The show ran for seven years.
In 1985, Whitfield was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
At the age of 92, she was granted damehood for her services in entertainment and drama.
