Smokers Alert the Cigarette Is Pronounced Dead

Cigarette Reports began to emerge on Jan. 09, 2019, that cigarettes will soon pass away. Phillip Morris announced the tobacco product’s death 138 years after it was invented.

Phillip Morris International (PMI) according to Newsweek, Marlboro’s manufacturer announced it would be phasing them out along with other brands they produce.

The company spokesperson explained that society expects them to act responsibly, according to the Country Rebel. The way to achieve this is to design a smoke-free future.

The real reason for this “dramatic decision” was technology was taking over. They want to sell smokers on a healthier alternative, the electronic cigarette. Country Rebel author lamented:

It looks like Marlboro cigarettes as we’ve known them for years – will be going the way of the dodo.

So — if smokers want a cigarette, they will have to buy tobacco and roll their own. Or will they?

Smokers Beware

As Tom Sawyer famously stated, “the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.” It appears contrary to rumors spread by various news sources about the impending the death of cigarettes was fake news designed to concern smokers.

The truth is the announcement was PMI’s. It was about the company’s desire to phase cigarettes out of production. Andre Calantzopoulos, CEO of PMI:

The ambition we have is to replace cigarettes as soon as possible with better alternatives, to smoking for the millions of men and women who would otherwise continue to smoke.

PMI has shared their “dramatic decision” on multiple occasions since early 2017.

It Is Not as Bad As All That

However, PMI and Phillip Morris USA are two different companies. Many do not know this so it was easy to fool them thereby escalating their fear.

The first “produces and sells Marlboros outside of the United States. The second is “a subsidiary of a separate company called Altria, [it] produces and sells Marlboros within the United States,” according to SNOPES.

Unlike PMI, Altria has not made definitive declarations about electronic cigarettes. Instead of replacing Marlboro, the corporation has another subsidiary to take care of technological smoking. The U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company claims to be “the world’s leading producer and distributor of smokeless tobacco.”

In a joint venture the NIH and FDA, The Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study results indicated that over a quarter of smokers use multiple types of tobacco products. This led the researchers to conclude this population is interested in alternatives, especially safer ones.

Smokers and non-smokers alike share the dislike of ashtrays and odor associated with traditional cigarettes. Americans are using flameless tobacco products more frequently. Perhaps, smokers should be aware, the cigarette may soon be dead.
