Amazon announced on Feb. 14, 2019, that they have canceled building a new headquarters in Long Island City, Queens, New York due to opposition from political leaders and residents. They stated more than 25,000 jobs would have been created.
The company released a statement stating that they deliberated and thought about building the campus, and decided not to build a new facility in Long Island City, Queens. Amazon felt that there needed to be a positive relationship with local and state officials and a commitment.
The statement continued by saying that 70 percent of residents support the investment and plans, but several local and state politicians stated they are against Amazon building a new facility. They also would not work with Amazon to help build a relationship that was needed to move forward.
The company was saddened to have reached this decision. Amazon loves New York and the Long Island City community. Amazon loved meeting small business owners, forward-leaning community leaders, and residents. Presently there are over 5,000 Amazon employees in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
Amazon was grateful to Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo who were very welcoming and supportive. Amazon did not plan to search for another site for a new headquarters. They would continue to build in Nashville and Northern Virginia.
