Riverdale’s Creator Explains How the Show Will Address Luke Perry’s Death

When news broke that Luke Perry had died at the age of 52 due to a stroke, many fans were shocked and devastated. Whether they remember him from his days on “90210” or the Hallmark channel, or are fans of his current run on The CW hit, “Riverdale,” the news of his death was a shock to the system.

Just two days after Perry’s death, a brand new episode of “Riverdale” aired featuring the actor. At the very end of the show a very simple in memoriam card paid tribute to Perry, but fans were left wondering what would happen next. After all, there are still a number of episodes left to air in the season, plus filming had not yet wrapped on Season 3 prior to Luke Perry’s death.

According to “Entertainment Tonight,” Riverdale’s creator and Executive Producer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, has finally taken the time to share how the show is going to address this real life tragedy. The show’s EP explained that at this time there have been no discussions as to how the narrative of the series will address Perry’s death. However, Aguirre-Sacasa shared that the actor’s death will be explained through his character, Fred Andrews.

Whether this means that “Riverdale” will suffer the same loss on the show or not remains to be seen, but based on the EP’s words, that is certainly what it sounds like. Fans may not want “Riverdale” to kill Fred Andrews, but the reality is that no one wants the role to be recast either.

During an official event for Aguirre-Sacasa’s other show, the Netflix hit “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” the EP said, “You know, honestly, we are I think all still in shock and are all still processing and grieving.” Which makes perfect sense considering how sudden the loss was. However, he does seem prepared to have “Riverdale” address this death on screen.

As Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa told “ET,” the “Riverdale” crew all knows that they need to address this loss, but for now they have decided to give themselves the time to mourn their friend and co-worker. Even though they have not decided how they want to handle Luke Perry’s death going forward, that does not mean that “Riverdale” has ignored the loss. Instead, all future episodes of the series are dedicated to the actor and his memory for as long as the show remains on The CW.

However, while the series may not have decided how they want to address Luke Perry’s death, it seems clear that not only will they do the character and the actor justice, but “Riverdale” will continue to make sure that the actor’s spirit lives on. Not only do fans have more episodes with Perry actually in them, but even after his scenes are done, the show is hoping to imbue every episode with the same heart, vivaciousness, and wisdom that the actor himself would have brought to the screen.

“Riverdale” will never be the same, and neither will the people who worked alongside Perry. Now fans will have to wait to see how the show honors his memory, even as they address his tragic loss.
