For the first time in the history of Chicago, a black woman has been elected Mayor. In this historic race, Lori Lightfoot went up against Toni Preckwinkle for office, assuring the third largest city in the United States would make history. However, that is not all that makes the election of Lightfoot so important, as she becomes the first openly gay mayor of the city as well.
Lightfoot enters office as a former head of a police oversight board, and with a legal background thanks to her years as a lawyer. Lori Lightfoot enters office as an excellent leader for the city. While she is a Democrat, she has described herself as being more progressive, which is in direct contrast to her predecessor, Rahm Emanuel.
As part of her initial campaign, Lori Lightfoot shared that she would be the best candidate for the job of mayor because of her desire to break from the “status quo.” Her goal is to deliver “equity, inclusion and fairness,” to the city of Chicago.
While change is never easy, having a mayor like Lori Lightfoot in Chicago is certainly a step in the right direction. As the mayor of one of the nation’s largest cities, Lightfoot will have a spotlight shining on her that will show the nation that change can happen from the ground up.
