
Oprah Winfrey announced on April 8, 2019, she is donating to help rebuild Puerto Rico after the 2017 hurricane and to support cultural and arts programs $2 million.
In a statement released by the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts fund on April 8, $1 million of the donation from Oprah will go to people to help their long-term needs after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, and $1 million will be put towards different cultural and art programs in Puerto Rico.
The Federation was created by Broadway actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for his role in “Hamilton,” to help support: dance, theater, creative arts, and literature.

65-year-old Oprah wrote in a statement that she was inspired by Miranda and his passion the help Puerto Rico maintain a vibrant and sustainable arts culture.
Oprah said she was moved with the commitment of Miranda and all the work which he did to bring “Hamilton” to Puerto Rico. The show started in January 2019 and was for a limited run of 23 shows. Miranda took over in his Tony-nominated part of Alexander Hamilton.
The show raised $15 million, which was donated to The Flamboyan Arts Fund.
In 2017, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and killed around 3,000 people, destroyed infrastructure and homes, and left people without electricity and drinking waters for months.
