Buttigieg

Mayor Pete Buttigieg 2020 Democratic presidential candidate was verbally confronted by a religious protester on April 16, 2019, in a town hall meeting in Iowa.

Buttigieg spoke with reporters after the confrontation and said he respected the protestor and his passion. He continued by saying that his feeling came from a passionate place, and one should respect that.

The South Bend, Indiana mayor is openly gay and married. At the town hall meeting, as he spoke about marriage equality and the need for it, the protester stood up and screamed at him “You have betrayed your baptism!” The protester was immediately escorted out of the building.

Buttigieg, unfazed, joked with the crowd saying “Coffee after church can get rowdy sometimes.”

Buttigieg said: “We are all dug-in, in very passionate ways, and I have respect for that. That gentleman believes what he is doing is what he thinks is the will of the creator. I would do things differently. We all should be able to do things differently.”

The rest of the event went on without any issues.
