On April 8, 2019, superstar recording artist Taylor Swift donated to the LGBT advocacy group Tennessee Equality Project $113,000.
Swift included a note to Chris Sanders, executive director of the organization with her donation. It stated:
Dear Chris, I am writing to you because I wanted to tell you that I am so very inspired by all the work your organization does, in particular, organizing the petition from the faith leaders of Tennessee to stand up against the “Slate of Hate” in the Tennessee state legislature.
Please give my thanks to all of them and accept the donation I am providing you to help you continue the work your organization and the faith leaders are doing. I am so very grateful that they are giving everybody a place where they can worship.
Swift, who calls Tennessee her home, also shared the handwritten note on her social media accounts.
The “Slate of Hate” bills permit adoption agencies to discriminate against LGBT couples based on their religious objections. It also prevents local and state governments from considering before hiring a contractor, the company’s policy regarding nondiscrimination.
A bill passed on April 8 in the House of Representatives adds locker rooms and bathrooms to a list considered a public place, where an individual could be charged with indecent exposure. Critics of the measure refer to it as a “bathroom bill.” They feel this may lead to individuals discrimination against the transgender community.
