Disease Spread to Humans by Dogs Is Found in Iowa

As of May 14, 2019, officials have stated that canine Brucellosis, a disease found in dogs, has been discovered in Iowa and is contagious to humans. Canine Brucellosis is often spread by contact with either objects with infected fluids on them or infected birthing tissue.

The diseased dogs were bought at an auction held by Iowapuppies.com. Iowa vet, Dr. Jeff Kaisand, says that the issue needs to be treated with conservation. He also states that all the dogs from the auction need to be found and the owners have to be notified of the disease. In addition to the notification, quarantines are currently being issued to the animals and facilities associated with the outbreak in order to help stop the spread of the disease.

According to the VCA, canine Brucellosis is a contagious bacterial infection. It can lead to infertility or abortions in dogs. In male dogs, the infection affects a part of the testicles. If it is newly acquired, a testicle or the scrotum will become enlarged or swollen, and if it has been in the dog’s body for a long time, the testicles may shrink or shrivel. In either case, the disease can lead to infertility. In female dogs, the disease affects the uterus, making her possibly infertile, she may have difficulty getting pregnant, or may abort in the late stages of pregnancy. Often times, there will be consistent vaginal discharge from them.

Symptoms of the disease in humans include sweating, fevers, joint pain, headaches and weakness. The illness is not fatal for humans and the symptoms are mild. The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship states that even though the disease can be spread to humans, the threat to most pet owners is minute. However, vets, dog breeders, or anyone who comes in contact with the infected blood or tissues are at a higher risk.

An animal rescue group who recently bought 32 canines currently has their dogs in quarantine to avoid the possible spread of the illness to other dogs or people. The group said that they have conducted tests but have not received any results yet.
