Actress Jodie Foster’s mother Evelyn “Brandy” Foster, who managed her career from the start of her career when she was a child and saw her win two Academy Awards died on May 16, 2019. She was 90 years old.
Foster’s death was reported in a statement by her family; daughters Jodie, Constance, Lucinda, and her only son Bud. In the statement, they said their mother died at her home in Los Angeles, Californa from dementia.
Brandy Foster was born in Rockford, Illinois and moved to California to work as a big-band singer. She also worked for a short time for a publicist in Hollywood, Arthur Jacob’s whose clientele included Gregory Peck, James Stewart, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly.
When Foster was in her 30s, she became a single mother. She started to manage her son Bud’s career, who was known by Buddy. Buddy, Foster’s third child, appeared in the spinoff for “Andy Griffith Show” called “Mayberry RFD.”
Jodie, the youngest child, when she was three years old, began to appear in commercials. Her first job was when she appeared in an ad for Coppertone suntan lotion. Her early television roles included “Mayberry R.F.D.,” “Paper Moon,” and “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.”
Foster was a savvy and demanding manager for Jodie. She made some moves which were questioned, such as having her daughter take on the role of a prostitute when she was 14 years old in “Taxi Driver” from Martin Scorsese.
Brandy wanted Jodi to be seen as something more than a child actor. This role earned Jodie an Oscar Nomination. She would earn four in her career, and she was now launched into her career as an adult actress.
In a statement released by Foster’s children, they stated that their mother was the most influential person in her family. She was also a fighter, champion, full of love, and fire.
They continued to say that there was nobody in the world who could match her style, with her corkscrew hair stating only five feet tall. Nobody messed with her, and may she always live forever in all of us.
Adding that they would always remember her big hugs, dimple smiles, and her four-letter words.
Brandy Foster would manage Jodi’s career until 1992 when she won her second Oscar for her classic role in “The Silence of the Lambs.” Jodie would also win in 1989 an Oscar for “The Accused.”
Brandy Foster is survived by her children Bud, Constance, Lucinda, and Jodie. She also has several grandchildren.
A service for the public has not been planned, and funeral arrangements have not been announced.
The family asked that instead of flowers, it is suggested that one should “look to the heavens, open your arms up wide and call her name. She would think that was funny.”
