Despite evidence to the contrary, GOP members continue to proclaim they are the law and order party. Republican furtherance of this myth defies logic. The party refuses to hold ex-President Donald Trump and soon-to-be ex-Congressman George Santos accountable for their crimes.

Notably, both of these lawbreakers have launched 2024 campaigns, and both claim they will not drop their election bids. Neither of them has taken any responsibility for their disgraceful behavior against the American people. And they declare the charges against them result from a left-wing conspiratorial witch hunt.

This past week a jury found Trump liable for sexual assault, and Santos pleaded not guilty in a 13-count federal indictment. But most Republican politicians failed to condemn their actions. Those Congressmen who said they would not support Trump as the Republican presidential nominee also declared they would vote for whoever is on the GOP presidential ticket, even if it were him.

It was a similar story in the House of Representatives. Speaker Kevin McCarthy vowed to support Rep. Santos ahead of the federal cases unsealing. Afterward, McCarthy claimed he no longer backed Santos but would not force his resignation and would continue to allow him to vote on the floor. The Speaker claims no further decision would be made until after Santos’ trial. Reportedly, he stepped down from his committee work. Only about a dozen of his GOP colleagues have also called for his ouster.

On May 10, 2023, the former president bewildered viewers during the CNN town hall, pushing the 2020 election fraud lies and advising GOP House members to force the United States to default on its financial responsibilities here and abroad.

Trump: the monster at our American door” by Steve Schmidt described CNN’s defacto GOP Trump rally as “a tsunami of lies that hit truth like a wave of water crashing into a beach full of thatch huts.” He continued: “The look on Jake Tapper’s face said it all. The CNN panel after the event, which included Tapper, Dana Bash, John King, Wolf Blitzer, and others, was notable because of that look — and Tapper was not alone. It looked like shame to me.”

During his rant, Trump repeated his claim that he did not know E. Jean Carrol, much less rape her. The lie was disproven. Nonetheless, the former GOP president continues to advance this lie even after the jury held him accountable for the physical assault.

Donald Trump Lawsuits (Updated May 12, 2023)

DOJ v GOP Rep. George Anthony Devolder Santos

Santos voluntarily surrendered the morning after the indictment was released. He pleaded not guilty to felony fraud and theft charges during his 2022 campaign: 7 counts of wire fraud, 3 counts of money laundering, 1 count of theft of public funds, and 2 counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York reported Santos to pay a $500,000 bond. The judge also ordered the GOP congressman to surrender his passport. Moreover, court records indicate he must obtain “permission to travel outside of Washington, DC, New York City, and Long Island.”

On the day he pleaded not guilty to the indictment on Long Island, New York, Santos settled a theft charge in Brazil. According to CNN, the GOP congressman confessed to defrauding a Rio de Janeiro clerk, Bruno Simões, of $1,300 over clothes and shoes in 2008. He was ordered to pay $2,000 to the Brazilian government and another $2,800 to the victim.
