Raised in the coastal area of Los Angeles, Kristen Stewart started her on camera acting career in 2001 when she was cast in the Disney TV production, “The Thirteenth Year.” In 2002, Stewart’s fortune began to take shape when a filmmaker noticed she possessed strikingly similar features to Jodie Foster, and immediately cast the 12-year-old as Foster’s diabetic daughter in the big screen thriller, “Panic Room.” The rest was history as Stewart dove into the prospect of cultivating an acting career.
After acting in a series of feature films, Stewart was chosen to play the lead role in Summit Entertainment’s anticipated blockbuster vampire romance movie, “Twilight.” Following the success of “Twilight” and subsequent sequels, Stewart fell off the high pedestal fans had placed her on when she was publicly embarrassed by “People Magazine’s” release of photos showing the young actress making out with director Rupert Sanders. While this event surprised Stewart’s fans, her boyfriend of 3 years, Robert Pattinson, and the film industry, it might be interesting to know, we have discovered seven of the most surprising and shocking controversial moments that occurred long before her indiscretion with Rupert Sanders.
One of the more well-known surprising moments in Stewart’s life happened when she was photographed in 2008 smoking pot.
The 22-year-old actress told Vanity Fair in an exclusive interview that it wasn’t such a big deal, but you can believe when this controversy emerged simultaneously with the release of “Twilight,” it was certainly a big deal. In fact, SFGate reported, “The actress was just 18 years old when she was caught on camera lighting up a marijuana pipe with her then-boyfriend Michael Angarano.” The website added, “The shocking photos hit the tabloids just days after the first “Twilight” film was released, and Stewart admits the scandal was the wake-up call she needed about life in the spotlight.”
Fan’s might find it somewhat surprising to learn, Stewart was reported to have cheated on boyfriend, Michael Angarano with Robert Pattinson before they officially became an item.
Angarano and Stewart were together during filming of the first movie, and he visited her in Vancouver while she was filming the second. What’s troubling in this scenario, is that Angarano was still dating the actress in April of 2009 while rumors not only claimed she was secretly seeing Pattinson, a number of compromising photos appear to indicate the two “Twilight” co-stars were more than just friends.
At the time, media outlets reported Stewart and Pattinson were spending a lot of time alone together in their hotel rooms. In any case, it’s fairly clear Stewart broke Angarano’s heart when she left him for Pattinson. They were relatively unknown actors when they fell in love back in 2005, but it appears Kristen outgrew the relationship when her fortune took a lightning turn upward following the release of “Twilight.”
Almost everyone will be surprised to learn, Stewart admits virtually casting Pattinson for the role he’s now famous for playing. In the November edition of Vanity Fair, the media giant asked: “How was it working with Robert?” Stewart goes on the record with the surprising claim: “I basically cast him. We did one day of auditions and a bunch of guys came in. Catherine Hardwicke, the director, afterwards was like, “What do you think? This is such a hard choice.” I was like, “Are you kidding me!? It’s such an obvious choice!” It couldn’t have been better. It was sort of perfect.”
Before Stewart’s infamous appearance on David Letterman in 2010, the late-night host conducted a controversial interview with the “Twilight” star in 2008. The notorious meeting proved surprisingly contentious as Letterman chastised Stewart for not yet finishing high school. Things appeared to take a turn for the worst when Stewart announced she would be driving to Russia once her “Twilight” promotional tour ended. Letterman pauses for effect and then countered with; “I hope it’s Berlin, then.” The remarks scored big on T.V. as Kristen squirmed confusedly while the audience roared (See Video Below). Many viewers have since remarked it was one of the most uncomfortable Letterman moments since Mary-Kate Olsen threw Spencer Pratt under the bus in an earlier Letterman broadcast.
Perhaps a moment more shocking than surprising occurred when Stewart stated her first impression of “Twilight” was that she “hated it,” according to the L.A. Times. In the article the Times quoted Stewart as saying; “I read a synopsis of the story before I read the script or the book — and I hated it. I didn’t want to be a part of something that presents this really ideological idea of love to so many young people. The synopsis made Bella so weak, as though the only reason she wanted to be with Edward was because he was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, because he could take care of her, because she didn’t have to be brave because he could be brave for her.”
Another fairly shocking moment that fan’s might be surprised to know took place in Nov., 2008. Starpulse.com reported that the actress called a group of her fans retarded. The incident happened during an interview with MSN. “Stewart spoke of being trailed by fans as she went from place to place promoting the new vampire movie.” According to the website, Stewart told fans, “You guys are celebrating something that has not come true yet. So, you are really retarded and have nothing to do with this creative process and I really don’t want to hear you celebrate in front of me. Get out of here! It’s my responsibility!”
Undisputedly, most shocking moment for both Stewart and her fan’s had to be the Oct. 5, 2012 Twitter report, which claimed Stewart died following a Jet-Ski crash in Turks and Caicos Islands. A month following the fake earth-shaking tweet, Global Associated News revived the ridiculous sensational ruse on their website, reporting; “Actress Kristen Stewart died while on a personal vacation in Turks and Caicos early this morning from injuries sustained in a Jet-Ski accident – November 6, 2012.”
They continued the story, claiming; “Preliminary reports from Turks and Caicos Police officials indicate that the actress struck a concrete boat slip in a marina on Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Kristen Stewart was the only passenger on the personal watercraft at the time of the incident. Specific details are not yet available.”
How many people were duped by such a misuse of media responsibility, we’ll perhaps never know, but I’m sure it came as a surprise to Stewart and her fans.

Though not controversial, you might be surprised to learn Stewart has an estimated net worth of $55 million, with the expectation of almost doubling that amount when you combine her “Breaking Dawn Part 2” $25 million dollar salary with the percentage of profits she will get from the film.
Celebritynetworth.com puts her total income from the final “Twilight” installment at $40 million. Not bad for a career that surprisingly began with a small role in “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.”
I’m sure it’s a role and a moment Kristen Stewart will never forget.
