Many shows opt for shocking deaths to add a twist and get the fans talking, but could Glee really choose to kill off Ms. Pillsbury? Jayma Mays, who plays the character, has certainly hinted at the idea after reiterating that she will not be returning to the show.
Emma Pillsbury has been a main character for the Fox show since it started in 2009, but over the last couple of years has been seen less and less on the screen. Originally brought in as a love interest for the glee club director, Will Schuester, she has become a much-loved character by the rest of the cast and fans.
The decision to cut back on episodes was not Mays’ decision either. In July last year, she confirmed that the current season was going to be her last, and then in October hinted that it was due to the writers. According to the actress, other members of the cast will also be leaving at the end of the year, and she understands the decision. Just like any other show, this show set around a high school means that people have to leave eventually. However, fans expected the high school characters to leave, not the teachers.
Upon initially hearing that the current season would be her last, many hoped that they would see her come back now and then. However, it seems like that will not happen and Mays said that it looks like it will be the last anyone sees of her character. Could Glee creators possibly kill off Ms. Pillsbury?
While shock deaths are normal, the cast and crew are already getting over the death of Cory Monteith, who played the show’s quarterback and singer, Finn Hudson. Monteith died of an overdose of alcohol and heroin in July 2013, and there have been two memorial episodes since.
The idea of killing of the character was just one way Mays mentioned that her character could permanently leave the show. However, then questions arose about how the character, who suffers from obsessive compulsive disorder, could end up dying. The actress joked that she could be sanitized to death.
Glee has recently been renewed for a sixth season, but of course there were questions about how many people would remain on the set. There have been a number of rumors surrounding characters leaving, including Brittney (Heather Morris) and Puck (Mark Sallings). When previously asked about the chances of characters remaining, Mays could not offer any insights. However, it is likely that some of the characters will leave the regular cast and just appear for guest appearances now and then.
It is not all bad news for Mays. She has recently taken on a role in The Millers, so is busy filming for that. She has also done work on Smurfs 2, for which she was nominated for a Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Movie Actress. The decision to write her out of the show has probably been just at the right time for her career. However the question still remains. Will Glee really kill off Ms. Pillsbury?
