It seems the third and last film in Sylvester Stallone’s action trilogy is almost here. A trailer of The Expendables 3: Roll Call, has just been released that certainly will excite fans near and far (see video below). Yes, audiences can still count on staples of the ongoing series, Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jason Statham to reappear once again. However, in the tradition of these flicks, some cast members are out of the picture while new ones have emerged. The saga, which will culminate with Stallone’s character, Barney, colliding with his old nemesis, appears to involve more daredevil stunts and a production that, most likely, spared no expense.
Just to play a little catch up, the main theme that runs through The Expendables films is a group of mercenaries, led by Stallone, who basically kick butt and rid the world of “bad guys”. The first installment of the franchise, 2010’s The Expendables, follows the group of armed recruits, who are tasked with overthrowing an evil Latin dictator. As the story progresses, audiences find out that the real bad guy is actually an ex-C.I.A. officer. When this film was first advertised, it surely delighted fans of 80’s and 90’s action flicks which almost always seemed to include Stallone, Schwarzenegger or Bruce Willis – all of whom starred in this first cast. It was particularly noteworthy to see Stallone and Dolph Lundgren on screen together, who both faced off against each other in 1985’s Rocky IV.
While the critics didn’t necessarily praise the films storyline, the action-packed movie was success enough with fans to make a sequel. While members of the original cast, such as Mickey Rourke and Steve Austin were left behind, new additions were made. In The Expendables 2, Barney’s (Stallone) gang of ruffians take on a psychopathic rival mercenary, with his eyes set on world destruction. This time they are aided with the help of new characters played by 80’s and 90’s action stars Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Moreover, staying with the saga were Stallone, Lundgren, Statham, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Terry Crews, Jet li, and others.
Now, as the new trailer suggests, viewers of The Expendables 3 will need to buckle up for “one last ride”. So, what is the plot of this climaxing action-packed monster of a film? It seems, years ago, Stallone’s character went up against an old rival – a man he thought he had killed. Alas, that man, Conrad Stonebanks, played by newcomer to the saga, Mel “Lethal Weapon” Gibson, is back for more. According to the story, Stonebanks had been an original founder of Barney’s crew, but turned to the “dark side” when he became an unsavory arms dealer. Unfortunately for fans of the series, Bruce Willis will not be returning. Although, that is no surprise as Willis announced his departure from “3” months ago over money issues. Still as the trailer points out, additions to The Expendables 3 will excite fans with a cast that includes Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, and Kelsey Grammar who, hopefully, will bring some top notch comedy to the screen. The Expendables 3 is set to hit theaters on August 15 2014.
