Those who love the game of golf and think nothing is better than a day out in the fresh air, often feel the need to explore options in other countries and Europe offers some of the best golfing vacation destinations in the world. This article highlights just a couple of these great options on the Iberian Peninsula, in Spain and Portugal. In each case videos are included to give readers a tour of the facilities.
Spain, for example, offers a multitude of excellent, world-class golf courses in virtually all regions of the country. Down on the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light) in southwestern Spain, one such golf course is El Rompido. Located in the Huelva area, the El Rompido Golf Club was opened back in 2003. The golf club has received excellent reviews in Europe.
The golf club has two excellent courses. El Rompido South Course is a scenic and challenging course and back in 2006, the El Rompido North Course was added to the mix. The South Course hosts the finals of the Daily Mail Foursomes each year and looks to be hosting more both local and international tournaments in the future.
The views over the ocean are pretty impressive too, as can be seen from the photo above, and right on site, visitors can stay at the five-star El Rompido Golf Resort Hotel for the ultimate in convenience and comfort.
Moving right around the coast and up to northeastern Spain, Catalunya, or Catalonia as it is also known, has much to offer in the way of golf courses and resorts along with a backdrop of really incredible scenery.
One such destination is the PGA Catalunya Resort. The resort is located just 15 minutes from the city of Girona, 20 minutes from the Costa Brava and 50 minutes from the iconic city of Barcelona, making it one of the best locations along the coast for touring around.
PGA Catalunya Resort offers two exceptional courses – the Stadium Course, which is ranked the number one course in the country and number 5 in continental Europe, and the Tour Course, which offers constant challenges and really spectacular holes for players at all levels of the game. There is a modern and stylish clubhouse available to patrons, as well as great practice and coaching facilities on site.
For some of the best golf vacation destinations in Europe and right next door on the sunny Algarve coast in Portugal, Penina Hotel & Golf Resort in Portimao is thought to be the original home of golf in the country.
The resort is the only one of its kind that offers three excellent golf courses. In fact, one of these, the Sir Henry Cotton Championship Course, was reportedly the first 18-hole golf course in the area, offering some of the most challenging golf in the world. The course has hosted 10 Portuguese Opens among many more prestigious events.
Penina Hotel & Golf Resort is located among beautifully scenic natural landscapes on 360-acres of land, and in 2012, the World Travel awards voted Penina Portugal’s Leading Golf Resort.
In closing, golfers seeking some of the best golf vacation destinations just can’t go far wrong when traveling to Europe and the Iberian Peninsula.
