American Horror Story: Freakshow is the highly anticipated fourth season of the AHS series and may be the most terrifying season yet. Previous seasons have focused on dark and gruesome themes amongst haunted houses, insane asylums and covens of witches, while Freakshow centers around a demented carnival.
The series’ fourth installment will feature numerous familiar faces from previous seasons including Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Emma Roberts. The show will remain true to the saga’s anthology-style of storytelling, placing the same cast in vastly different roles as well as setting the story in a different time period and location. Freakshow will take place in Jupiter, Florida in 1952, and the majority of the story will occur in the midst of one of the country’s last freak show carnivals. Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars, a German who serves as the owner of said freak show.
Emma Roberts will play Maggie, who, according to the actress, does not appear as a “freak” when audiences first meet her. Ms. Roberts says her character may have more off-kilter depth to her than meets the eye. Roberts began her work with the AHS cast for its third season, Coven, in which she played a big-time Hollywood actress who was sent to a coven to hone her newfound witchcraft powers. Roberts stated that Coven was a bit lighter and more commercial than past seasons, but Freakshow is utterly horrifying. The young actress continued to say that she actually had nightmares just from reading the latest season’s script and considers it the most terrifying season.
Jessica Lange, who has served as a stand-out performer in every season of AHS since its inception, has announced on multiple occasions that Freakshow will be her final season. Lange has been nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie for all three seasons of AHS thus far, winning two of them. Fellow co-stars such as Emma Roberts and Sarah Paulson have expressed their hope for Lange to pull through for at least one more season of the show. Lange has not commented on the issue for quite some time, but fans certainly hope the Oscar-winning actress will grace the nation with her stunning performances on the show for as long as possible.
More actors rounding out the cast of freaks in the latest season include Kathy Bates, playing a bearded lady, Angela Bassett as woman with three breasts, Sarah Paulson as a conjoined twin and newcomer Michael Chiklis playing a supremely strong man. Other returning cast members include Evan Peters, Frances Conroy and Denis O’Hare whose roles have not been made clear as of yet. One more crucial cast member is that of Jyoti Amge who holds the title of the world’s smallest woman at 2 feet, 6 inches tall.
Freakshow has released a number of short teasers that hint at the horrific tone of the show. The viral videos include that of a sword swallower, one of the most frightening clowns one has ever seen and another clown-like figure that has an atrocious smile that can cause one to lose some sleep.
