August: Osage County actress Misty Upham’s body reportedly has been found and identified in a ravine near Seattle, Washington. The discovery was made in the mid-afternoon of Thursday, October 16th.
The body was found by one of the search teams involved in the hunt, which started last weekend after the woman’s family reported her missing after several days of no contact. They were not originally sure that it was the actress, as the surrounding terrain was too steep for an immediate investigation. Upon seeing a strong resemblance to the actress, they managed to make their way down to the ravine and subsequently identified the body as that of the 32-year-old. The search party, which consisted of both family members and members of the Auburn, WA Native American community, then called local authorities in order to help retrieve the body. Upham’s uncle has since given a statement to popular gossip website TMZ confirming the news that the body belonged to his niece.
News that the actress had gone missing broke last Saturday, launching a panic amongst fans and loved ones in regards to her whereabouts and safety. She was said to have gone to visit friends, and simply failed to come home. The last time she was seen in public was on the previous Sunday (October 5th), when she left an Auburn apartment building alone to go and visit said people. Her father gave a statement to the Hollywood Reporter shortly after she was declared missing, in which he explained that his daughter had been exhibiting erratic behavior in the weeks leading up to her disappearance, something he believed was related to the fact she had recently changed the medication she had been taking, which she was prescribed to help with said behavior. He detailed the last time he spoke with Upham, a conversation in which she reportedly told him and her mother that they did not need to worry about her anymore. Concerned for her safety and riddled with fear at the possibility that this was a suicide hint, the father quickly notified authorities of Upham’s words and instructed them to find her in order to make sure she had not done anything fatal. By the time officers had arrived at the apartment, however, the actress had already left. The apartment building in question is reportedly something of a hotspot for 911 call relating to suicide, with authorities reporting a total of four calls being made throughout the year, including an additional call on the same day the father had called.
Upham is best known for her role on the aforementioned American drama film August: Osage County, in which she played the character of Johnna Monevata. The film, headlined by A-list actresses Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, was a modest success after receiving mixed reviews from critics and regular viewers alike, with reviewers favoring the cast more than the movie’s plot itself. Many felt the movie to be too dark, and believed that it could have benefited from at least a small amount of light humor to breakup the constant heavy drama that followed the film from beginning to end. Fans of the play the film was originally based on, which contains the same name, felt that the original play contained more dark humor than was portrayed in the movie adaptation, which they said took away from its meaning and significance. It received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress via Meryl Streep’s role, an award that was ultimately given to Cate Blanchett for her role in the movie Blue Jasmine. Upham herself was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for her work in August: Osage County, a title she did not end up winning.
