Taylor Swift, usually the poster child for poise and gracefulness, took something of a tumble at last night’s Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve special, hosted by American Idol vet Ryan Seacrest. The singer was making her way off stage following two stellar performances when she lost her footing on the stairs and slid down a few of them before regaining her balance and giving the crowd a wave that she was doing just fine.
The 25-year-old shook off the slip like a boss, laughing off the moment and going on her way as though nothing embarrassing had happened at all. The performances in question that had just been delivered were that of her smash hit Shake It Off, and a new track from her recently released album 1989, entitled Welcome to New York (an appropriate song to perform given that the festivities in question were taking place in Times Square). Swift received tumultuous applause and cheers for both performances, with many fans in the audience holding up “We <3 Taylor” signs and the like in order to show their appreciation for the Pennsylvania born entertainer.
2014 was certainly quite a year for Swift. Her album sales from the aforementioned record went through the roof within hours of it being released, instantly skyrocketing to first place on the Billboard 200. It sold well over one million copies in its first week, marking it as the album with the highest sales week since 2002. As a result of the album’s success, Swift became the first artist in history to release three albums in a row that sold one million copies or more in their first week. The album itself produced two number one singles; Shake It Off, and Blank Space. The track Out of the Woods, which is rumored to be about the singer’s somewhat tumultuous relationship with One Direction member Harry Styles, reached the top 20 although it fell short of achieving first place status in terms of the charts.
This previous year was also a new start for Swift in terms of love and relationships. Although she certainly garnered a name for herself in the past for writing about past lovers and dating experience, Swift has publicly been single since the aforementioned relationship with Styles, which came to an end in December 2012. She recently gave an interview with MuchMusic in which she detailed how much her life has improved since she began focusing on herself, something she said she had been advised to do for years but could not find the inner strength to not need somebody by her side at all times. Since becoming single, however, Swift says that she is able to figure out what truly matters and knows that one must come to terms with their own happiness before they can expect someone else to provide it for them.
It remains to be seen what 2015 has in store for Taylor Swift, although hopefully it does not involve more public tumbles. There is no word yet on whether she is working on a fifth studio album as of right now, or simply enjoying touring and the success of her last one.
