*** UPDATE *** Suspect Arrested Following SWAT Standoff *** UPDATE***

At approximately 19 minutes after midnight on August 9, 2012, LVMPD Patrol Officers responded to a reported shooting in front of a convenience store located in the 5100 block of East Sahara Avenue. Officers located a male subject suffering from what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. This individual was transported by ambulance to the Sunrise Hospital Trauma Center where he later died of his injuries.

LVMPD Homicide Investigators have determined the victim and another individual were inside of the store when an altercation developed between them and the suspect. All three individuals exited the store into the parking lot where the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim multiple times.

The suspect is described as a light skinned black male adult, 20-25 years of age, standing approximately 5’7” – 5’8” tall, with a thin build, a corn row hair style, and a tattoo in his left hand. He was last seen wearing a white shirt with dark colored striping on the collar, sleeves and pockets, and with vertical striping on the button line, baggy Khaki shorts, and black socks and shoes. The identity of the deceased victim and the exact cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing. A follow-up investigation by LVMPD detectives which included numerous tips from the public identified James Johnson, 20 years of age of Las Vegas, as the suspect in this crime. Investigators tracked Johnson to a residence in the 2400 block of Abarth Street in Southeast Las Vegas, and at approximately midnight last night attempted to take him into custody.

When Johnson refused to peacefully exit the residence and surrender the LVMPD SWAT Team responded to the scene, and Crisis Negotiators were successful in securing the suspect’s surrender at approximately 4:22 a.m.

James Johnson, who also goes by the street name of “Crazy” was booked into the Clark County Detention Center, on the charges of: Murder with a deadly weapon, Assault with a deadly weapon, Battery, and Coercion.
