Louisville women join men for the championship game

Louisville and Louisville Will be in the Championship Games

Monday night the men’s Louisville Cardinals will face the Michigan Wolverines in a game to decide the National Championship.  Today the Lady Cardinals defeated the California Bears to advance to the lady’s Championship Game Tuesday evening.

Antonita Slaughter scored 18 points on six 3-pointers and Louisville clawed back from a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat California 64-57 on Sunday.

Cal took an early lead, but the second half saw their double digit advantage slip away.  The Bears’ offense sputtered as Louisville used a pair of 7-0 runs to get within 47-46 with just under 10 minutes to play. Louisville then took its first lead since early in the first half when Sara Hammond connected on a pair of free throws with 3:40 to play.

Trailing by three points with 30 seconds left, Cal inserted 3-point specialist Mikayla Lyles. But her attempt from the top of the key fell short and the Bears were forced to foul.

The Lady Cardinals had upset the consensus tournament favorite Baylor Bears and moved on to the final four.  They are the lowest seed to ever reach the final game.

Will Louisville be the first university in history to have both the men’s and women’s teams win the National Championship in the same year?  Michigan will have the first chance to eliminate that possibility on Monday night.
