Angelina Jolie chooses major surgery to prevent cancer – should you?

Empowered Patient vs. Empowered Being

Angelina Jolie chooses major preventative surgery against cancer – do you need to?

Recent news coverage reports – Actress Angelina Jolie chose to have a double mastectomy after a test revealed what doctors call a ‘’faulty” or “mutated” gene- known as BRCA1. She is now opting to have her ovaries removed as well, all in the name of “prevention”. It was estimated by her doctor that pre-surgery, she had an 87% risk for developing breast cancer, and a 50% risk for ovarian cancer. Post-surgery, her risk has ‘supposedly’ dropped to under 5%. Some news coverage has applauded Jolie, calling her an “empowered patient”, but is mutilating your body in the name of prevention really empowering? Let’s take another perspective on this issue and see.

It is the year 2013. We are a privileged people to have access to such information as the World Wide Web provides us. There is really no excuse for being ill-informed these days, or for ‘putting your trust all in one modality’ – so to speak. Do we really still live in an era that takes medical testing as the ultimate ‘authority’ on possibilities? Here we are steeped in the knowledge of metaphysics, quantum physics, eastern mysticism, intention experiments, visualization studies, natural therapies, raw foods, and more. The internet is full of inspirational stories and businesses which both teach and show individuals how to take care of their bodies and reverse the risks of developing any kind of ‘threatened illnesses’ and to even heal those already in progress. We are saturated by inspirational authors and speakers such as Louise Haye, Dr.Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, Gabriel Cousins, Eckhart Tolle, and others who have touted personal empowerment for many years now. You can literally get on the internet today and type in a wide variety of ailments, either threatened or ‘real-time’, and receive guidance from a pack of authorities and lay people alike on how to move through, heal, change your thinking and create the experience you desire.

Twenty years ago, the information available today was reserved for those who were ‘lucky enough’ or ‘inspired’ (by certain synchronicities) to happen upon the right book, teacher, person or story that could afford them a more elevated experience than could society and the medical establishment. Today, it is nearly common place – or rather, has the potential to be.

We are literally on the ‘cutting edge’ where information is available that could change reality as we know it; Information that could and would make certain industries and their ‘claims’ – now known as the ‘authority’- practically obsolete. In this moment, the only reason this isn’t so is because the ‘masses’ are still living by an old model of belief. The ‘majority’ still largely function from a disempowered state – where they believe whatever the doctors (and other ‘authorities’) tell them.

If the populace could be as exposed to information available on something as simple as healthy eating, for example – as they are to ‘side effects from medications’, a HUGE step we would take in the direction of self-empowerment. What if every American not only knew that visualization affected their bodies in the same way as something ‘actually happening’, but were told this information repeatedly, and given examples, techniques and testimonials, at the same magnitude they have been told about their risk of getting cancer? What would happen then? What if doctors told their patients that whatever they truly believed was going to happen to them – was in fact – what their experience was going to be? What if we stopped preparing everyone to get cancer, get dementia, lose bowel functions, lose their eyesight, etc. What then? What if instead, it was emphasized that you could keep living vibrantly as long as you choose? What if it the people started to believe in their own capacity for good health and well-being, despite what anyone else said?

To truly become empowered, one has to know the power that resides within, and act upon that power.

I read another article recently that stated “How Angelina was duped by cancer doctors into self-mutilation for breast cancer she never had”. Hmmm. There you go. The article goes on to list self-empowering ways of preventing breast cancer including eating a healthy diet and supplementation such as resveratrol, omega fatty acids and raw citrus. Thank you Mike Adams of the Health Ranger!

With stories like Angelina Jolie and others who have taken medical ‘progress’ to be the ultimate authority on their lives, I say “Wake up America!” Empower yourselves by knowing all your options and by starting TODAY to realize that you are your only true authority.

We should have more freedom of choosing medical choices than we have? They U.S. medical system is fascism not democracy!

I have to tell you a little truth about modern society and information that you can get from internet today. That information is written by random persons. I work in computer development and I am aware that on the internet I can find a lot of information but I have no idea if that what I just read is true or not. Unfortunately that also happens with books. Everyone can write a book today. I got the felling that it is not important what do you write but how do you do it.
When it comes to your health and your life, the best thing to do is to listen an educated person because almost everything that tells you is scientifically proven and it is based on professional experience that has been building through years. If you were on collage you know that everything that you study there is proven. If doctor tells you what is the best thing to do that is probably because he has seen a lot of people dying from that cancer. You shouldn’t risk your life for some “self called doctor”.

There is truth in both the article and the nurse’s response to it. There are so many things we can do to take better care of ourselves. We live in a culture that has commodified every aspect of human life. Of course we can do better naturally.

Unfortunately, this has caused us also to be disconnected from truth. Perhaps this type of cancer really is not curable with a better diet, using the example of one or two people won’t answer this.

Ultimately it is up to a person to choose for their own self. I listen to my intuition beyond any MD, nutritionalist, Naturopath, my mother, my fear and illusion, etc. My own intuition tells me what is a right path of action for me. I trust it beyond everything else, even when it doesn’t seem to make sense.

When I listen to everyone else and their opinions, I can become misled.

I’m outraged by Mike the Health Ranger Adams’s interview about Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a bilateral mastectomy because she carries the BRCA-2 gene. Angelina was living with an 87% chance of developing breast CA and a 50% chance of developing ovarian CA. It was not a matter of “if” she would develop the disease, but “when”! The crazy notion of changing your diet to evade the disease is playing Russian Roulette with your life and your family’s future. Moreover, Angelina’s mother was proactive with her disease with diet and lost her fight.
And the fact, your guest implied, being open with her decision, is exploiting women, and he is worried because it encourages women to mutilate themselves? Are you serious? This is an example of pure male chauvinistic thinking and clearly shows the shallow mind of someone who appreciates a breast(s) that will most likely kill a woman versus loving and appreciating a woman having a worry free, long, full, happy, and cancer free life with their family, friends and loved ones.
I’m a nurse and have been in Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery for many years. I have seen the ravaged bodies caused from breast cancer and witnessed patients lose their heroic fight to the disease, many with small children at home. I have worked with the best Breast Reconstruction Plastic Surgeons in this country, and in every case, the reconstructed breasts are more beautiful aesthetically than the original. And, if a patient has cancer in one breast, the opposite breast can also be, removed, reconstructed, augmented, lifted, reduced, etc., to match the reconstructed breast. Therefore, women do not lose their sense of femininity and womanhood breasts lend.
The awareness Angelina has empowered women with is so important in today’s society for not only the 1% of women who carry the gene but for women who also continue to take Estrogen of any kind which also increases the risk of developing Breast CA, exponentially .
I feel like your program promotes setting women back 100 years, once again, because you have deduced proactivity, to the level that women should be worried about body mutilation because it may not be visually pleasing to Men.
I challenge your guest to visit any top plastic reconstructive breast surgeon’s office and look at the before and after photos. Maybe then you both might appreciate a woman’s life more than her breasts!
