Earthquake Magnitude 6.6 Strikes 56 Miles from Managua, Nicaragua


earthquakeThe perimeter of the Caribbean plate actually involves four distinct plates, the North America, South America, Nazca, and Cocos.  Today, a shift in those plated resulted in a magnitude 6.6 earthquake, which was 56 miles WSW from Managua, Nicaragua.

There are no reports of damage or injury from the quake that occurred about 11:34 a.m. local time.  A tsunami alert has been issued.

This was the 68th earthquake measured in the range 6-6.9 in 2013.  There have been 534 between 5-5.9.

The most devastation was in  Sichuan Province, China, when a 6.6 magnitude resulted in the death of 193 people.  Iran had a 6.3 in Bushehr Province, in which 37 died, and another of magnitude 7.9 in Baluchestan Province, which was responsible for 35 deaths.

Because today’s 6.6 magnitude earthquake which struck 56 miles from Managua, Nicaragua, in the ocean, so far there are no injuries and no serious damage.
