Republican Governor Brian Sandoval said he will veto a bill passed by Nevada’s legislature to require universal background checks. In typically right wing fashion, he has pledged to support the NRA instead of the people of Nevada. The vote was 23-19.
Last minute provisions were added that would include faster reporting of court-findings of mental illness and requiring a doctor to report a patient who makes a specific threat toward themselves or someone else.
This is the final day of Nevada’s bi-annual legislative session. If Sandoval is cowardly enough to veto the bill, another version cannot be submitted until 2015.
There has never been one valid argument against implementation of universal background checks. There have been several invalid statements. They would not be a violation of the vague and outdated second amendment. Background checks would have no effect regarding the purchase of firearms by the nation’s gun nuts. The gun lobby, the NRA, claims they wouldn’t do any good. That is the most egregious misrepresentation of the change in gun policy in the history of idiotic statements by the NRA and their Republican puppets.
If Laughlin and Lanza had been forced to go through extensive background checks, lives may have been saved. Ignoring the actions of mass murderers, if one woman or one child was saved by denying a deranged family member, or former boyfriend or husband access to a firearm, it’s worth the effort.
The only reason Republicans in the federal government and Governor Sandoval oppose the amendment, is because they have been ‘bought and paid for’ by the NRA. When a lobby owns our governing body, we are in deep s**t.
Northern Nevada continues to be a majority of the far right. But as these uninformed begin to leave their earthly bounds, attitudes will change. But how long, and how many lives will be lost while we continue to have uncaring people such as Governor Brian Sandoval denying the will of his constituents?
So remember this in the next election. Although the people believe in them, and the legislature passed a law, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has promised to veto universal background checks. It’s time to veto him.

What? How could Lanza have EVER gone through a Background Check??? He STOLE THE GUNS. The insults of this article aside, how can this be allowed stand without correction?
Wow, the governor follows the Constitution instead of drinking the Obama Cool Aid and he’s “owned by the NRA”. As if Obama followers are not “owned” by Monsanto and GE. If you don’t like the pesky Costitution of the US, there’s always the Socialist “Utopia” of Cuba and North Korea. They don’t have a costitution there and they have TOTAL gun control!
Huh… I sure don’t see “86%” supporting this bill, I see about 98% supporting a veto of this garbage.
If you want NYC style gun laws then move to NYC. If you don’t lije guns then that is your right and your choice. If you don’t believe in God that is your choice. If someone tries to break into your home the first thing you will do is call someone with a gun and pray that that someone arrives before you or your family is harmed
The Legislature made it very clear that THEY were the ones not representing the people of NV. This bill was overwhelmingly supported, yes; by Bloomberg and his parade of out-of-state “victims.” The bill was widely unpopular among Nevadans. Just read the actual comments left on the Legislature’s website, including how many “fors” were cast in the last two days. You know, do some “reporting.”
James obviously prefers to rant using emotions rather than write a factual piece.
Hint: Try not to let your emotions take over your writing, otherwise no one will read it for content. In Jame’s case, so far, no big loss.
As a citizen I want to see many more controls over gun ownership beyond background checks. I think limiting the number and type of arms is critical to our Nation’s domestic safety. I feel many individuals who interpret the Second Amendment as the right to operate as vigilantes have a point of view that continues to undermine our most basic constitutional principals: rule by law and judicial process.
James Turnage sounds like a fuzzy foreigner who hates freedom. Eat a dick and die jimmy
Thank you Governor Sandoval. Where can I get a list of those who voted for this bill, so that I can vote against them next election?
The Governor is standing with the Constitution.
If I were to remove the slanderous, bigoted, inaccurate, misrepresented, ignorant and erroneous language from this propaganda hit piece all that would be left is the punctuation.
Sb221 is a totally unconstitutional feel good law. Why do all the people on the left keep attacking legal gun owners instead of going after criminals? How does making me a criminal improve anything. Do us a favor, come up with a solution that doesn’t take away legal gun owner’s rights and only punishishes criminals and you will have a winner. Quit believing all the liberal hype and lies that Obama and Bloomburg are spreading and listen to the facts and the truth… from the legal gun owners.
Article 1, Section 11 of the Nevada Constitution reads as follows:
Every citizen has the right to keep and bear arms for security and defense, for lawful hunting and recreational use and for other lawful purposes.
SB 221 is clearly unconstitutional.
Dear James,
You need to do more research on the current state of records contained in the NICS database (as per the ACLU and New York Times articles). A DoJ audit of this database in 2010 showed that 50% of the records in this database either: contained errors; were completely erroneous; or were incomplete. Does this sound the kind of data you want to use to perform not only firearm related background checks, but employment background checks as well?
James, the NRA is people like me, law abiding citizens that would have protected your butt had you been attacked by a person who does not follow any laws! What part of protect yourself do you not understand?
The problem with background checks, is that most people banned from owning them should not be banned. Anyone that can be trusted to walk the streets should be able to own a gun.
Ditto, good post Brenda James if you think this SB221 is such a good thing you should shove it where sun don’t shine because a good thing has never hurt nobody. Brian Sandoval has more nuts than anyone in politics that is for more gun control to stand up against all you jerk knee feel good libs, you sir are the coward because you can not stand defeat.
Who is uninformed? Try explaining how universal background checks will stop criminal use of firearms – do you really believe that a would-be criminal is going to submit to this? Or, perhaps – is your goal NOT crime prevention, but instead infringement of gun ownership?
Ummm Adam Lanza murdered his mom and stole her guns… How would a back round vheck have stopped that?
Let me just say you are an absolute IDIOT James Turnage! Who do you think is going to enforce stupid laws like this? What makes you think Laughlin and Lanza would have followed any law on the books? Only idiots would think that someone who has a mental illness and wants to go out and harm others who bother obtain a gun legally. These are just feel good laws they will never prevent anything!
