Republican Governor Brian Sandoval said he will veto a bill passed by Nevada’s legislature to require universal background checks.  In typically right wing fashion, he has pledged to support the NRA instead of the people of Nevada.  The vote was 23-19.

Last minute provisions were added that would include faster reporting of court-findings of mental illness and requiring a doctor to report a patient who makes a specific threat toward themselves or someone else.

This is the final day of Nevada’s bi-annual legislative session.  If Sandoval is cowardly enough to veto the bill, another version cannot be submitted until 2015.

There has never been one valid argument against implementation of universal background checks.  There have been several invalid statements.  They would not be a violation of the vague and outdated second amendment.  Background checks would have no effect regarding the purchase of firearms by the nation’s gun nuts.  The gun lobby, the NRA, claims they wouldn’t do any good.  That is the most egregious misrepresentation of the change in gun policy in the history of idiotic statements by the NRA and their Republican puppets.

If Laughlin and Lanza had been forced to go through extensive background checks, lives may have been saved.  Ignoring the actions of mass murderers, if one woman or one child was saved by denying a deranged family member, or former boyfriend or husband access to a firearm, it’s worth the effort.

The only reason Republicans in the federal government and Governor Sandoval oppose the amendment, is because they have been ‘bought and paid for’ by the NRA.  When a lobby owns our governing body, we are in deep s**t.

Northern Nevada continues to be a majority of the far right.  But as these uninformed begin to leave their earthly bounds, attitudes will change.  But how long, and how many lives will be lost while we continue to have uncaring people such as Governor Brian Sandoval denying the will of his constituents?

So remember this in the next election.  Although the people believe in them, and the legislature passed a law, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval has promised to veto universal background checks.  It’s time to veto him.
