Monteith was found dead in a Vancouver hotel room according to local law enforcement officials.
Hotel staff at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel room in downtown Vancouver went to check on him after he did not appear for his checkout time and found him dead. They called the police.
Doug LePard, acting chief of the Vancouver police department called on the scene said Monteith was “clearly deceased.”
“I want to pass on our condolences to the family, friends, cast mates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith,” LePard said in a news conference held in Vancouver late Saturday. “As was the case in countless homes, I watched Glee regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.”
Monteith had checked into his hotel room July 6.
Reports say that the actor had invited several people to his room on Friday night. According to police, hotel surveillance video showed him returning to his room alone in the early hours of Saturday.
Police ruled out foul play. An autopsy will be conducted on Monday.
Lisa Lapointe, the local coroner said: “We do not have a great deal of information as to cause of death.”
According to reports, Monteith had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction since young age and had publicly discussed it. He told one interviewer he took “anything and everything.” He was treated for drug abuse at age 19 and had honestly talked about his fight against addiction.
His friends and fans expressed shock at the news of his death.
Mark Salling, one of his cast mates on “Glee,” tweeted “no” after hearing the news.
Melissa Kates, his publicist said, “We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss.” She added, “He (Monteith) had been frank about his struggles with substance abuse.”
According to reports, in 2011 Monteith told Parade magazine that he began using drugs when he was 13 years old. When he was 19, he went into rehab after his mother and his friends interceded.
Monteith had acted on the television show since its start in 2009. In 2011, he won a Teen Choice award for top actor in a comedy. In 2010, the show’s cast won a Screen Actors Guild award for an ensemble in a comedy.
Monteith had been dating Lea Michele, who played Rachel Berry in the show. The show follows a group of American secondary school misfits in their quest for singing contest glory.
Sources say Michele loved and supported Monteith through his struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. She told People magazine one time that she was proud he was seeking help.
