Kanye West is still on tour promoting his 2013 release Yeezus, but already there have been several startling rumors about his next album. Q-Tip and Rick Rubin are rumored to be producing it, while West himself has compared the new album with Bruce Springsteen’s career.
In an interview on The Truth, Q-Tip, who is not known to give many interviews let alone talk at length with the media about upcoming projects announced a pretty startling piece of information. “I’m producing Kanye’s new album with Rick Rubin,” Q-Tip said. The legendary rapper did not go into many more details than that but already buzz is staring to conjure itself around these kinds of names.
For those not familiar with Q-Tip he was a part of the influential A Tribe Called Quest and can be found on just about any list of the greatest rappers/producers of all-time. Rick Rubin’s name is also reason to get excited. The once co-president of Colombia records, Rubin has produced albums for everyone from The Beastie Boys to Johnny Cash to Jay Z.
But that is not the only evidence we have that a new Kanye album will be in the works soon. It is a good thing to because with all of Kanye West’s recent gestures about fashion it would be hard to totally believe that a new album of music is already being thought up.
But West announced himself recently on Philadelphia’s Power 99 that he is already planning an album that he expects to be out next summer.
For those Kanye fans who preferred the lush grandiosity of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy over the experimental minimalism of Yeezus there is more good news for you. In the interview with Power 99 West gave listeners a sneak peak of his new album in Bruce Springsteen terms.
“Bruce Springsteen dropped this album called Nebraska and right after that he did Born in the U.S.A.” said West. For those Kanye fans that are not well versed in Springsteen’s catalog Nebraska was a lo-fi masterpiece, recorded on a cassette tape with only the Boss his guitar and a harmonica. It was dark and challenging and did not sell very well. Although Yeezus is not quite so lo-fi as Nebraska it is also dark and challenging and so far has not sold well by Kanye standards.
But Born in the U.S.A. was a chart topping success for Springsteen and saw him return to prior form and increase his fan base. “This next one, I have a feeling, because of what we did right now, has to be Born in the U.S.A.”
This script is actually not so original for West, he has done it before in his career. After the success of Graduation, Kanye West released 808’s & Heartbreak. Like Yeezus it was introspective, minimal and did not have a clear cut radio hit. After he had apparently released that demon, West made My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy which he has said was made out of an obligation he felt he had to fulfill after the last record.
Despite the poor sales of Yeezus, which will in all likelihood end up known more for its influence than its sales, Kanye West couldn’t be higher right now. Fans now have the added incentive to hunger after his next release because of the recent rumors of Q-Tip, Rick Rubin and West’s own Springsteen comparison.
