Tobacco Ban Solution Rests on Shoulders of E-Cig

Tobacco alternative found in electronic cigarettes

To many, tobacco remains a problem in search of a solution. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) offer an alternative for those that wish to eliminate the smell of cigarettes, cut back on tobacco intake, and rejoin their friends in the warm that they have been denied. Twelve years ago NYC banned smoking inside, on Thursday electronic cigarettes were added to the ban.

Tobacco stands as the highest cause of preventable death in the United States. However, this country is based on freedoms, those that wish to smoke have the right to do so, but when it becomes such a big problem to not only the smoker but bystanders as well actions must be taken. Enter the electronic cigarette. This smoking alternative comes in a number of different styles and flavors and runs on battery life. Some e-cigs contain a mixture of nicotine and flavoring but others have no nicotine at all. E-cig smokers exhale vapor instead of cigarette smoke and many flavors available are actually downright pleasant.

With so many smokers in the U.S. it is ridiculous to expect everyone to stop smoking. Compromise is the true solution to any powerful problem. The e-cigs helps smokers by saving money, cutting back on the amount of nicotine taken in, and allowing them to continue living their lives like everybody else. Tobacco is embedded in the lives of many and can not be expected to suddenly disappear.

New York City has banned the use of e-cigs indoors. City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said that she did not want to “renormalize” smoking. For many smoking is normal, it is apart of their life, if it wasn’t the tobacco industry wouldn’t be so lucrative. E-cig manufacturers declare that the vapor emitted is harmless but Quinn declares that more evidence is required to prove that.

Description behind e-cig

The Food and Drug Administration has not issued the same tobacco rules on e-cigarettes although they intend to. Other states are also afraid of the e-cig mist and have banned e-cigs indoors. Such states include Utah, North Dakota, New Jersey and Arkansas. Honestly if cigarettes and e-cigarettes become criminalized in an attempt to lower the number of smokers in the U.S. it is to be expected that something will take its place. Maybe smokers will turn to marijuana or simply become more alienated due to the negativity surrounding smoking. Many who smoke have tried to stop and can not, turning against them may mean turning against proud Americans that have dedicated themselves to this great nation.

Electronic cigarettes are an alternative to smoking. It is far more likely that cigarette smokers will turn to e-cigs rather than e-cig smokers changing to actual cigarettes. Miguel Martin, president of the e-cigarette brand Logic had this to say on the matter. “Companies like us want to be responsible, but when you have municipalities prematurely judge what should be and what shouldn’t be, based not on the science, I think it does the public a disservice.”

Compromise is the key to any drastic problem. The compromise for smoking cigarettes is smoking e-cigarettes, criminalizing that now will yield no benefit for anyone. Citizens of the United States of America have freedoms and liberties, these should not be denied because a compromise is not exactly what a particular party wants, that is the point of a compromise. Will the NYC tobacco ban lead to bigger laws down the road? If they have their way, most likely.

It’s obvious that you have a financial interest in e-cigs Garret so please declare your interest rather than posting this disingenuous article. The truth is that e-cigs are just another delivery mechanisms for drugs of dependence and they are also full of a range of noxious chemicals to which the long term effects are yet to be seen. What we do know is that the vast majority of people in the US are non-smokers and of those 17% or so who do smoke 90% wish they had never started. Banning another highly addictive drug delivery device is good public health policy. Although smokers who want to reduce the harm of many other carcinogens in normal cigarettes can smoke e-cigs in private.

Tahir, I am not sure what you mean considering I have no financial interest in e-cigs. I also don’t smoke them or normal cigarettes.
