Today Deepika Padukone, the leading lady of Bollywood celebrates her 28th Birthday. The model-turned-actress has established herself as the most sought after leading lady in Bollywood as she starred in four mega hits in 2013.
Padukone is the daughter of a famous Indian badminton player, Prakash Padukone. She was born in Copenhagen on January 5, 1986. Her first film Ashwariya was not in Hindi but Kannada, produced in 2006. Kannada is a language spoken in south India. It goes without saying that the Tamil and Kannada film industries, in the south of India, are not at par with Bollywood.
One year later Padukone made her debut Hindi film Om Shanti Om, starring opposite Shah Rukh Khan. It is near to impossible to be paired with King Khan in your very first film but Padukone has that singular honor. This film was directed and produced by Farah Khan, a famous choreographer of Bollywood. Om Shanti Om, the debut of Farah Khan as a director, was a runaway success and made Padukone a household name not only across the length and breadth of India but everywhere in the world, where Indians reside. She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Debut– Female, for her double role in Om Shanti Om. This film made Khan a respected director and Padukone an accomplished actress, so it wasn’t much of a surprise than Khan was the first one to tweet happy birthday Padukone.
Her next couple of films were not received well either by the audience or the movie critics. It was 2012 feature Cocktail, that revived Padokone’s career. Cocktail did extremely good business on the box office and also got rave reviews from the critics. This proved to be a turning point in her fagging career. It not only resurrected her career but won her many accolades for her acting, as well.
2013 was the year that firmly established her credentials as a leading lady in Bollywood, surpassing Kareena Kapoor and Aashwariya Rai Bacchan. Kapoor is the scion of the illustrious Kapoor dynasty of Bollywood; while Bachhan is the daughter-in-law of Amitabh Bachhan or the Big B. Unlike the two other heroines named above, she had no Bollywood background or connections, therefore, her achievements are all the more laudable.
Last year, she gave back-to-back blockbuster comedies: Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani and Chennai Express. Chennei Express is the highest grossing Indian film of all times. In this film Padukone is once again cast opposite the King Khan. Chennei Express like her first Bollywood venture and now almost iconic Om Shanti Om has earned Pudokone many awards and critical acclaim.
Pudokone has within a short span of time earned for herself everlasting fame and fortune that alludes many for years, especially in the highly competitive world of showbiz. She is the brand ambassador of many high-end multi-national brands like Louis Vitton, besides she has appeared on the cover of famous fashion magazines like Cosmopolitian and Vogue. Recently Stardust the prime Indian movie magazine nominated her India’s no.1 in its list of the top-ten leading ladies of Bollywood. A very happy birthday Padukone.
