At Sunday’s People’s Choice Awards, acclaimed actress Sandra Bullock once again proved she is a Hollywood sweetheart.
The Gravity star took home four trophies, essentially sweeping the categories she’d been nominated in. Bullock won for favorite comedic actress, dramatic actress, movie actress, and snagged the movie duo award with pal George Clooney, her co-star in Gravity. It’s been a busy year for the actress, having starred in a hit comedy with comic actress Melissa McCarthy and in the space drama with Clooney.
The Heat, Bullock’s buddy comedy with McCarthy, won for favorite comedic film.
Bullock, 49, proved her sense of humor in accepting one of her many awards, commenting how she’d learned a lot in the past year and had fun while doing so. “On Gravity, the nicest people in the world would string me up and leave me there, and I still had an amazing time,” the Oscar-winning actress told the packed Nokia Theater on January 8, 2014.
Since starring in her Oscar-winning role in 2009’s The Blind Side as Leigh Ann Tuohy, Bullock has certainly proven her grace under fire, as well as her outstanding choices in projects. Just days after winning the Best Actress Oscar for her role as a suburban mother who took in a homeless black teen, then-husband Jesse James confessed to having an affair, effectively putting an end to the picture-perfect marriage that Bullock had enjoyed for five years.
She’s also gone on to star in one of the biggest hits of the summer of 2013 – The Heat, with Mike & Molly star Melissa McCarthy. It was not the first time Bullock had played a hard-nosed law enforcement officer; a favorite movie among fans is Miss Congeniality, where Bullock played an FBI agent who went undercover in a beauty pageant.
It’s likely her breakout role in 1994’s Speed that fans remember. As Keanu Reeves’ romantic foil, Bullock proved that she had the acting chops to headline a movie, and from there, she established a solid career as a comic actress with roles in films like While You Were Sleeping, Two Weeks’ Notice and The Proposal. The Proposal, in fact, was one of 2009’s biggest comedies, and one of the three movies Bullock had that year. After what appeared to be a two-year hiatus for the actress, The Proposal was one of the hit movies that year that helped Sandra Bullock once again prove she’s a Hollywood’s sweetheart. While The Blind Side was what ultimately had won her the Oscar that year, people were still laughing over the comic timing she and co-star Ryan Reynolds shared. She’s also become known for her dramatic roles, which ultimately is what snagged her acting’s top prize.
Since divorcing motorcycle tycoon James, Bullock enjoys a fairly media-free existence with her young son Louis, whom she adopted shortly after she and James had divorced. Over the last four years, she’s starred in a wide range of comedies and dramas, including The Heat and Gravity. She also has her first animated feature coming up in 2015 – The Minions, where she will play villainess Scarlett Overkill.
Bullock, though, continues to maintain a fairly low profile in spite of ongoing successes at the box office. Her sunny smile and sense of humor seem boundless, and as she continues to be choosy in her upcoming projects, her fans continue to wait with eager anticipation to see what the very likeable Bullock will bring to the box office next. What remains certain is that Sandra Bullock will once again prove she’s a Hollywood sweetheart.
