The Oscar race heated up with 12 Years a Slave becoming a frontrunner after a big win in key awards at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) ceremonies in London today. The picture was honored as best film and garnered the Lead Actor award for Chiwetel Elijofor. The BAFTAs have become a solid predictor for Oscar night. Other winners today included actors Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle and Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips as well as director Alfonso Cuarón for Gravity.
