‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Will See Dr. Burke Return

Grey's AnatomyGrey’s Anatomy fans will be happy to see Dr. Preston Burke return on set. The character was written out of the show after Isaiah Washington was fired from the set.

The 50-year-old actor lost his position on the show due to clashes on the set. One of the biggest issues was some anti-gay remarks her reportedly made to his co-star T.R. Knight. Knight, who played George O’Malley on the show, had not openly admitted that he was gay at the time.

Fans last saw Washington’s character in the season three finale. He left his on-screen love interest, Dr. Christina Yang, at the altar. She was left broken-hearted and fans felt cheated that this love did not last. However, there was not much that the writers could do with the bosses’ decision to fire the actor.

It is because of Yang, played by Sandra Oh, that Dr. Burke will make a return. Oh is leaving the show at the end of the current season, and needs a good storyline to leave on. She is one of six original cast members still on the show and fans want to see her leave in better ways than previous original members like Knight and Katherine Heigl, who played Dr. Izzy Stevens.

Creator of the show, Shonda Rhimes, explained that letting fans see Dr. Burke return to the Grey’s Anatomy set for the one episode is important to bring Oh’s character full-circle. It will help to unfold the character’s journey completely, and allow everyone to say goodbye to the character.

The last two characters to leave the show were Dr. Lexie Grey and Dr. Mark Sloan, played by Chyler Leigh and Eric Dane. They were killed at the end of season 8 and start of season 9 respectively, after the plane crash in the season 8 finale. A number of fans took to social media sites to express their hatred for the ending for the two characters, after they had just found love with each other again. Fans felt cheated at the ending and many vowed never to watch the show again. Rhimes does not want that to happen with Oh’s decision it is time to end her tenure on the popular medical drama.

Despite Washington’s previous anti-gay remarks, GLAAD is praising the one episode return of his character on Grey’s Anatomy. GLAAD is the media monitoring organisation focusing on the promotion of LGBT people within the media. It stated that the recent promotional statements for marriage equality over the last few years have shown that he is supportive of LGBT people.

Rhimes previously admitted that season four and five were difficult for her to write. She was recovering from the aftermath of having to let one of her main characters go, and Washington repeatedly explained in the media that the slur was not to Knight but during an argument with co-star Patrick Dempsey, and they made up afterwards. However, she did later admit that a lot of great things for the show came out of Washington leaving. She is now excited to bring Oh’s storyline to a close, and that includes fans seeing Dr. Burke return to the screens for Grey’s Anatomy.
