Easter weekend this year happened to take place during the annual Sakura Con anime convention in Seattle Washington. This convention calls to fans of anime, video games, comic books, movies, and just about anything you can dress up as. A number of voice actors joined the con this year to give interviews and run panels for fans, among them was the legendary Matthew Mercer.
Matthew Mercer is the voice actor for a large number of video games and anime. Some of his most recognizable roles in video games are Chrom in Fire Emblem: Awakening, Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 6, and Alvin in Tales of Xillia. Some of his most recognizable roles in anime include Kiritsugu Emiya in Fate/Zero, Kanji Tatsumi in Persona 4: The Animation, Levi in Attack on Titan, and for the older anime fans, Kei from the movie Akira.
The world of voice acting is an industry, but Matt Mercer is an individual within that community that fights for the fans, considering he is one himself. As an example of his credibility, Mercer tallied the number of RPG’s he has played and ended with a list bigger than 80, he has played through all of Final Fantasy VII eight times. His backlog of games continues to stack as he attempts to find time to replay Final Fantasy Tactics (on the iPad) yet still make it to newer gems like Bravely Default. Regardless, Mercer is one voice actor that can appreciate video games and anime for the enjoyment they bring and the everlasting memories they can create.
During the interview, Mercer could hardly contain his excitement about some of the new projects he has been working on. Due to his legal obligations, he could not reveal the names of any current titles he is apart of, but he did wager that he was involved with about 20 different projects right now (including anime and video games). Some of the upcoming projects Mercer is working on have been announced already, but the cast has not been. With such a large number present projects, could one of them be the upcoming Super Smash Bros. sequel? With the outstanding success of Fire Emblem: Awakening, Chrom seems like a shoe-in. However, Mercer relayed that Nintendo has not yet reached out to him about lending his voice once again as Chrom.
Will fans of Matthew Mercer get to see him at PAX? Actually no, Mercer’s next con will be Omni Expo. Where PAX is concerned the date just doesn’t work out, it happens to fall on the same weekend as the week-long annual event; Burning Man. Mercer said he enjoyed Pax in the past but, “I’m a burner at heart.” When asked about PAX Australia, Mercer exhibited that if he was given the opportunity to go, he would be very happy accept.
In what mediums will fans experience Matthew Mercer next? Unfortunately, such answers will take some time before being announced. For his more recent works, fans can check out the Diablo III: Reaper of Souls or Infamous: Second Son. A big thank you to Matthew Mercer for being so accepting to his fans and for Sakura Con for setting up such an event during the already busy Easter weekend.
