Zac Efron, star of High School Musical trilogy, will be producing and staring in the thriller Associate, which is based on John Grisham’s book from 2009. Efron will join an elite list of Hollywood’s big names (Tom Cruise, Denzel Washington, Julia Roberts, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon etc.), who were main protagonists in the film adaptations of books from the popular American author John Grisham. Production Company Ninja’s Runnin Wild, which is owned by a young actor, is now looking for a screenwriter and then they will offer the script to the studios.
Efron became famous thanks to the highly successful Disney’s High School Musical trilogy. He also acted in romantic dramas such as Charlie St. Cloud and The Lucky One, which was based on the book written by Nicholas Sparks. Last year, Zac Efron was in rehabilitation because of cocaine addiction and recently he got into trouble again. The 26-year-old actor was reportedly punched in the face when he got into a fight in downtown Los Angeles. Despite all Efron’s scandals, many people believe that producing something as big as the movie Associate, is a big step forward, especially because it is a movie based on the book by John Grisham, who is one of the world’s bestselling authors.
The Associate tells the story of a young and handsome Kyle McAvoy, distinguished by an extraordinary flair for law. After graduating from Yale Law School, bright future is in front of him and it can only be destroyed by a dark secret from the past. If it came into the wrong hands, it could mean the destruction of his dreams, career and his entire life. And this is exactly what happens. A group of men has an incriminating video in their hands and with it, they threaten McAvoy to do what was requested of him. They offer him something that every ambitious young lawyer would kill for: a job as an associate at the Scully & Pershing, the largest law firm in the world. If young man accepts the job, he will quickly become fabulously rich. But the offer is not as naive as it may appear at first. McAvoy, who is pushed into a conflict between two mighty defense contractors, will have to infiltrate Scully & Pershing’s files and by that, work against his company. So in addiction to practicing law, he is expected to steal, lie and take part in something that could send him to prison or worse, get him killed.
Few years ago, the late Tony Scott also tried to make a movie based on this tense thriller. Screenplay based on Grisham’s book was then written by William Monahan and Shia LaBeouf was supposed to play the role of McAvoy. But that project never came true. So far, nine of Grisham’s books were turned into movies. The most successful among them were “The Firm,” starring Tom Cruise and “The Pelican Brief,” starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington. Thanks to Zac Efron, after a long time, another one of John Grisham’s books will come to the big screens.
