Chris Brown Still a Prisoner

Chris Brown will remain a prisoner in jail for 131 more days. The singer admitted to violating his probation May 9. The 25-year-old confessed to the assault charge he received in 2013. He was involved in a fight outside of his hotel in Washington D.C.

Originally, Judge James R. Brandlin sentenced Brown to a year in jail. However, the judge gave the singer credit for the 234 days he spent in jail and rehab. Time was also docked off for good behavior behind bars. The charges stemmed from the 2009 assault charge Brown faced after he physically abused former girlfriend Rihanna hours before the 2009 Grammy Awards.

Chris Brown was taken into federal custody April 3. Brown has been a prisoner since March 14. Prior to his arrest, the singer was dismissed from a rehab facility due to violent behavior and breaking program rules. He was being treated for anger management, bipolar disorder related symptoms and substance abuse. He was arrested last October after allegedly punching a man in the face after he attempted to take a photo with the star outside of the W Hotel.

Brown’s attorney tried unsuccessfully to prevent the 25-year-old from being taken into federal custody. During Friday’s hearing, Brown answered “Yes sir,” to questions Judge Brandlin asked him including whether he committed the crime in Washington. The judge determined Brown would have to complete the rest of his 1,0000 hours of community service once he is released from jail. When looking into his case, Brandlin considered Brown’s age during the Rihanna assault and the undiscovered mental illness.

The singer was diagnosed with bipolar disorder earlier this year. Besides the charges against him for domestic violence, Brown has also faced troubles with the law regarding a brawl with Drake at a New York nightclub and for throwing a brick at his mother’s car window.  In an open letter, a rehab facility stated that the 25-year-old acted out and became aggressive because of his untreated mental health disorder. Brown was also said to have severe sleep deprivation and he was self-medicating himself.

Chris Brown rose to fame with his self-titled debut album in 2005. The CD sold over two million copies in the United States. The singer made his film debut in Stomp the Yard, which premiered Jan. 12, 2007. He was named Artist of the Year in 2008 by Billboard Magazine.

After his tumultuous relationship with Rihanna ended, Brown began dating aspiring model Karrueche Tran in 2011. However, in 2012, the media began to speculate the singer was attempting to rekindle the flame with the Rude Boy performer. Brown continued to date Tran until October 2012, where he announced in a public statement he did not “want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna.”  Shortly after the breakup, the 25-year-old resumed his romance with Rihanna in January 2013. The couple broke up again in four months later.

Brown will still be a prisoner until he serves the remainder of his additional 131 days. The Washington D.C. incident may or may not influence the singer’s pending case. The 25-year-old will remain on probation until Judge Brandlin orders otherwise.
