Facebook Could Be Losing Its Popularity to Instagram

Facebook is losing to Instagram as the most popular social media platform. It used to be that everyone was constantly on Facebook at all hours of the day and night. However, Instagram has quickly taken over that role. More and more users of Facebook are spending less time browsing through their friends’ biographies on Facebook and instead checking out their “selfies” on Instagram.

According to a recent internet poll surveying 7,500 high-level and mid-level income teenagers, Instagram is definitely the new desired social media channel. Instagram draws its users to its simplicity and immediacy, not to mention its awesome filter settings. On Instagram, everyone is a model.

One of the greatest features of Instagram is its ability to post right to away to all the other social media sites that teens are on as well. Now with one simple tap, a person can post a photo to Instagram and also have it immediately linked to his or her Facebook and Twitter account if so desired.

It is clear that Facebook is losing to Instagram as the most popular social media platform on the market today. The numbers are hard to argue with. A survey conducted in 2013, which consisted of over 5,000 teenagers, had results showing that only a mere 33 percent of teenagers found Facebook to be the greatest social media network. This number was 10 percent fewer than the previous year.

One of the main reasons why Instagram is coming out on top is due to the old phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” No one has time to sit and write out how they are feeling or describe the beautiful vacation they are currently on. Everyone wants to show it, and that is what Instagram allows its users to do. Instagram users can simply take a picture, throw a filter on it if so desired, upload it, and ta-da! After that followers can write comments if they want to, but in the end it is the picture that matters, not the words.

Another reason why teens flock to Instagram is the lack of advertisements. Nothing is more annoying than seeing an endless side panel of ads that are attempting to be catered to that person’s interests. Instagram is great in that sense as it has no ads whatsoever, all it is made up of are the photos of the users of Instagram. Facebook on the other hand has hundreds of ads always in plain sight, a big annoyance for some people.

Instagram is not hiding its popularity, it can easily be found downloaded on to any teenager’s smartphone these days. In fact, it is also very popular amongst adults as well, as it is a great way to show off their adorable new babies. According to Instagram, there are approximately 150 million active users enjoying this free app.

Although Instagram seems to be taking the spotlight from Facebook, it is not bad news for the Facebook company. In April of 2012, Facebook bought Instagram for a whopping $1 billion. Even though Instagram may be cooler, Facebook is still reaping all the benefits. While Mark Zuckerberg could care less, it can be safe to say that in a popularity contest Instagram would win for most desired social media platform over Facebook.
