Gwyneth Paltrow Needs to Think Before She Speaks

Gwyneth Paltrow

It is time for Gwyneth Paltrow to think before she speaks from now on. She needs to do this if she wants to remain a respected role model in Hollywood. Over the last few months she has cause controversy by speaking out about her life and offering her opinions without really thinking about it.

The most recent was comparing online comments towards celebrities to war. It was likely the Iron Man star’s way of comparing it to something that everyone would understand, but it has certainly backfired. That is because compared to war, the attacks that celebrities face online is simple. It is very easy to deal with—such as coming off social media completely and taking a step away from the paparazzi—in reality.

After her comments on May 27, Green Beret Bryan Sikes decided it was time to speak out. He will not be the only person wanting to speak out over this issue, and he has certainly not been the only one when it comes to the silly things that Paltrow says. However, he did strike a chord with many, and brought up points that some would never even consider. One of those points was about the wives [and husbands] of those who come back from war. People are not just physically affected, but can come back as different people mentally and emotionally. It is the loved ones who have to pick up the pieces. The celebrity attacks online are nothing compared to the change when soldiers return to war.

Paltrow really needs to think before she speaks from now on. She is losing credibility in the business, and it could cause a backlash on her career. While she has been lucky enough to only work small parts when she wants to, that will not be the case for the rest of her life. She has children to look after, and financial hardship can happen to anyone at any time. It may not seem like it will happen to her, but nobody really knows the future. With enough bad press, producers and networks will start to wonder whether it is worth hiring her for their projects in fear of people boycotting them just because of her.

The war comment has not been the first time she has spoken in a controversial way. Just recently, she was attacked for her comments about being a Hollywood mom, and how it is easier working a 9-5 job. The comment seemed to spark an argument from Angelina Jolie, who made it clear that privileged moms have no right to complain. There are single parents working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. A Hollywood mom can pick and choose her movies and TV shows, and take a few years out of acting to raise children without too many financial worries. This is especially the case for those moms who have a partner, whether married to one or not.

The Iron Man actress has a very bad habit of speaking her opinion and upsetting others. While there is a side that says that those who disagree should just not read her comments, there are people who look up to her. It is time that Paltrow thinks before she speaks, because her comments could come back to haunt her one day.

Agree with Gotohp Freed, don’t these people know what a metaphor is? Obviously it was not meant literally, but certain people are quick to jump on anything GP says, and President Obama as well.

Alas, there is no quick and easy fix for shallowness and a lack of perspective.

Gwynie draws fire by stoking the ire in an ironic disconnect. Simple fix: Shut up.

Gwen is yet another entitled liberal who feels the rest of us need to conform to her fantasy world.

I think America is envious of Gwyneth Paltrow although she seems to need a dose of
realism. She is priveledged, myopic and self involved in the world of celebrity.

I suppose there must be more pretentious and clueless celebrities than Gwyneth Paltrow, but I’d be hard-pressed to think of one.

The uber idiots are the ones who actually think Gwen meant it literally and not as a metaphor or figure of speech. Mr Green Beret and Ms McCain and other USA war machine offspring seem to think they own the word WAR. And no one can use unless referring directly to American conflicts. Ergo, dictating how Americans speak. Thus making you dictators like Putin. The word WAR was here before America was born. It is English language. The word war is not exclusive to you war pigs. Expressions from business to sports use the word WAR all the time. Saying something is like not saying I relate to a GI that lost his arms by an IED. Gwen was not making that connection. Stop being dictators and haters. And take a course and creative writing so you both know creative use of language.

Context: She said it right after Memoria Day (big in the US), so extra clueless, self-absorbed and thoughtless. Similar to making those remarks on November 11 elsewhere. The backlash is understated, all things considered.
