According to the latest reports, all nominees for the 2015 Grammy Awards will be revealed on Friday, Dec. 5. However, the revelation of the nominees will be carried out in two parts. The most prestigious one – the Album of the year nomination, will be announced in the evening, at 9 pm on CBS, during the one-hour Christmas special – A Very Grammy Christmas. All other 82 categories will be revealed early that morning.
The Recording Academy wanted to change the way of unveiling the nominees a little bit, after they have hosted a Grammy Nominations Concert LIVE! for the last six years. The holiday special will keep at least that one single category of nominations in a performance show format. However, something simmilar has already been carried out by some other music organizations, like the CMAs.
Grammy Awards first launched the announcement of its main nominees through a televised concert in 2008, however, Neil Portnow, who is the Recording Academy CEO, said in an interview on Thursday that it was time to switch it up. Portnow stated that they are freshening things up and changing it all a little bit, but despite the fact that it will all be slightly different, the kick-off for Grammy season will still be getting all of the nominations out that day.
The one-hour Christmas special, A Very Grammy Christmas, will broadcast on December 5, at 9 pm and it will be hosted by rapper and actor LL Cool J. Furthermore, the show will also feature Ariana Grande, Tim McGraw, Maroon 5, Pharrell Williams and some other artists, which will be announced at a later date, according to Ken Ehrlich, who is the producer of the show. A Very Grammy Christmas will be taped at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium on Nov. 18 and Ehrlich said that the Album of the year nominees will be revealed just a little before the end of the show.
During A Very Grammy Christmas show, the artists will be performing holiday songs and their own hits as well. In addition, all of the performers will be discussing and sharing their favourite holiday moments, as well as their favourite Grammy moments. In his statement, Ehrlich said that if any musical artist is asked what his best Christmas gift would be, eight out of 10 of them would most probably reply: a Grammy nomination. Except for Ariana Grande, who had a breakthrough this year with several hit songs, all currently announced performers are Grammy winners.
According to Jack Sussman, the CBS’ executive Vice President of specials, music and live events, what people ultimately want is to connect with real stories and great music, so they want to kick off the Grammy season with an event that will let the fans not only hear music, but also to hear heartfelt and engaging stories.
The 2014 Grammy Awards were handed out in January and Daft Punk won the prestigious Album of the year award for the Random Access Memories. The 2015 Grammy Awards will air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 8 and it will include 83 categories.
