Jimmy Fallon and Jeff Daniels Play ‘Pyramid’ on Tonight Show

Jimmy Fallon

Monday has rolled back, and with it, another terrific episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon! From Dumb and Dumber To, actor Jeff Daniels will be on the show, as will actress Mckenzie Foy, who appears in the movie, Interstellar. Later in the show, Fallon played Pyramid with Nick Jonas, Jeff Daniels, and Usher. The musical guest of the show was The New Basement Tapes, featuring singer Elvis Costello!

Jimmy Fallon began the Tonight Show, as usual, after he welcomed his audience, with his monologue, joking about people and events in the news. Some of the jokes follow:

“Here’s what everybody’s talking about,” he began. “Both President Obama and President Bush were interviewed over the weekend on Face the Nation. Bush said there’s a 50 percent chance that his brother, Jeb, would run for president, but there’s an 80 percent chance that he won’t.”

Then, Jimmy Fallon made a couple of jokes about Bush and also Face the Nation, and made a joke about Texas being “Ebola free.”

“During a speech last week, Putin made a speech in which he said ‘The whole meaning of life is love.'” Fallon made up several other, far more humorous, quotes he attributed to Putin. “I hear that Pepsi is making a beverage that’s a combination between Mt. Dew and Doritos. Or, as stoners call it, breakfast.”

“Paris has started fining people for taking pictures of the Eiffel Tower at night, because it’s copyrighted,” Fallon mentioned. It is actually true.

Fallon said that Drew Barrymore and Channing Tatum will be guests later this week, and U2 will be there the entire week next week. He then announced the guests and said that he and Jeff Daniels would be playing Pyramid with “a couple of surprise guests.”

Fallon mentioned last month about two of his writers giving out their email addresses last month. They got over 300 email responses and went out on a double blind date. The Tonight Show taped the whole thing. The two writers went out with two women they had never met before. They had bouquets of flowers for them, and shirts with their faces on the fronts and the backs of their heads on the backs.

The two young women did not know exactly how to take some of the things that the two comedy writers told them. A funny part of the night was when they all rode a mechanical bull. At the end of the date, one of the two women said that she would go out again; the other one, not so much — she was just silent. The two women were Rachel and Maisey, and Rachel actually did go out on a second date with one of the writers.

When the Tonight Show came back from a break, Jimmy Fallon welcomed Jeff Daniels to the show. The Newsroom’s last season premiered last night, and Daniels said “We really threw all we had into this one.”

“You’re still doing music, right?” Fallon asked.

“Yes,” he said. “With my son’s band. We have toured all over Michigan. For our wedding reception, I wrote a song for my wife called The Big Bay Shuffle.”

“What time of the day was it?”

“11:30 a.m. on a Tuesday,” Daniels said. He told Fallon how he saw two middle-aged women sort of shuffling in place as they listened to Englebert Humperdink. His wife called it “The Big Bay Shuffle,” which was the inspiration for the song.

Then, they talked about Dumb and Dumber To. Daniels said “You know what brought it back? To be honest, the fans brought it back.”

In a clip from the movie that Fallon played, Daniels told Jim Carrey that he had a “new roommate.” Carrey, upon seeing him asked “Who’s the astronaut?” It was someone who cooked crack, though Daniels’ character thought it was “rock candy.” He said “People come from all around the city for it.”

When The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned from more commercials, Jimmy and Nick Jonas played Pyramid against Jeff Daniels and Usher.

Announcer Steve Higgins explained the rules and Fallon introduced Nick Jonas, his partner. Then, Jeff introduced Usher, his partner. Usher had a sweatshirt on and a beard. The eam with the highest score will win.

“Ew!” was one of the categories. Daniels selected “Get On Your Feet,” where Daniels had to get Usher to say special dance moves, like the Moonwalk. Daniels give visual clues, more than verbal ones, as if the game was charades.

Jimmy Fallon chose “Forget About It,” about famous gangster movies. Fallon gave great clues for Scarface, but Jonas did not know the answers to any of the movies, not even The Godfather. “He’s fifteen years old!” Fallon griped.

Usher decided to go with “Ew!” He had to describe slimy things. Worms was the first one — somehow, Daniels got that answer and one other in that category.

Jonas chose “It’s Not Easy Being Green.” It was words that rhymed with “Green.” Jimmy Fallon and Jonas did much better but just picked up four points. It put them in the lead, though.

Then, Usher gave clues for the category “It’s a Numbers Game,” about musical acts with numbers in their names. Usher tried to sing the songs of the groups, like Boys II Men and The Jackson Five, and Daniels kept saying “Fifth Dimension!” though he did get “U2” correct.

“What About Bob was the final category. It was about “Famous Bobs.” Jonas gave the clues, and Fallon got three right, for the win. Then, the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon went to another commercial break.

When the Tonight Show came back from the commercial break, Jimmy Fallon introduced his second guest of the show, actress Mckenzie Foy from Interstellar. She was also in the Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn. Fallon wished her a happy birthday, as today was her birthday. He got them birthday hats to wear, and he knew that she liked root beer, so he had root beer cookies to give her.

“When I’m not working or at school, I’m doing Tae Kwon Do,” she told Fallon. She showed him a couple of moves. She told him “Don’t cry,” before she did a move that bent his wrist and forced Jimmy Fallon down to the ground, like an Aikido move.

They talked about the movie, and how silent it is in space. Then, Fallon showed a clip from the movie. In it, Mckenzie plays Matthew McConaughey’s daughter in the movie.

After The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon returned from yet another break, Fallon introduced the group, The New Basement Tapes, and Elvis Costello. Costello sang Lost On The River from their latest album, Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes. Three other people in the Bob Dylan tribute group are Marcus Mumford, Jim James and Taylor Goldsmith.

Jimmy Fallon has had some fantastic Monday night episodes, but this was easily one of the best. Jeff Daniels was funny in the video clip from Dumb and Dumber To, and he also talked about his more serious acting role in The Newsroom (HBO). Fallon had great guests to play Pyramid with, also, in Nick Jonas and Usher. Young actress Mckenzie Foy was very entertaining, also, and the legendary Elvis Costello sang with the group The New Basement Tapes. With a night like that on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, what will the rest of the week bring?
