National collection week for Operation Christmas Child kicks off this week in Las Vegas on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at the Life Springs Christian Church as the forerunner to next week’s drive, from November 17 through to the 24th. This charitable collection is set up and run each year to help 10 million “needy” children across the globe who otherwise will not be getting anything for Christmas.
The benefit is run by Samaritan’s Purse, an international relief and evangelistic Christian organization run by Franklin Graham. This yearly event has been running since 1993 and since it began, over 113 million children in over 100 countries have received these “shoebox” gifts. The local contact for this Christmas charity is Ms. Brenda Meehan and she, along with a whole lot of Las Vegas volunteers will be setting up for the Saturday Shoebox packing party on Friday. The operation is taking place at the Life Springs Christian Church and apart from the shoe boxes packed “on the day” caring children, and anyone else, can actually drop off shoebox gifts during the following week.
Video tutorials on how to pack a shoebox gift have been filmed by Scott McCreery the season 10 winner on American Idol. This 21 year old award winning country artist and Christian supports the program and the video was uploaded back in 2011 but the instructions are still the same. Another supporter, is Duck Commander Uncle Si Robertson who uploaded his video tutorial October last year on how to pack up an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift. Folks who want to participate in the collection drive kicking off this week in Las Vegas can watch either of, or both, these informative videos to see how it’s done.
Guardian Liberty Voice Deputy Managing Editor Michael Smith will be at the Life Springs Christian Church on Friday November 14, to talk to Brenda Meehan about Operation Christmas Child and see how the good folks who volunteer to run this even locally go about arranging these gifts for those kids across the world. There Michale will be talking to the local volunteers and photographing these big hearted people packing the gifts up and he may even pack a box as well. According to the press release, these shoe boxes are shipped across the world by any means required, plane, trains and automobiles, and “even elephants.”
In 2014, the charity wants to reach out and deliver 10 million shoe boxes to an equal amount of children. Each box can contain items that range from something as simple as a pencil or a toothbrush to a toy. Operation Christmas Child also encourages hand written notes of hope and encouragement in each gift sent. Countries across the world receive these gifts, one such area was Rwanda in Africa, where Ms. Susan Elliot traveled this year to drop off shoebox gifts for the children of that country.
For those who want to take part in the “kicking off” party on Saturday, November 15 where Operation Christmas Child volunteers hope to pack over 4,000 boxes which will go toward the Las Vegas goal of 17,000, the location is Life Springs Christian Church at 2075 Warm Springs Rd. Others can join in the spirit of the charity and drop off their packed shoe boxes at the various collection points in the city during the week of the 17th through the 24th of November. Collection point locations will be included in the Friday article in the Guardian Liberty Voice for those who wish to take part. Until then please watch the videos below on how to pack a shoebox gift.
