For the tenth month in a row, Sony’s Playstation 4 (PS4) sold more game consoles than its competitor, Microsoft’s XBox One. Sony hit 10 million direct sales to customers in August of this year, a number which Microsoft has yet to reach. The NPD Group released its monthly tracking report, and Playstation 4 announced the news Thursday on their Twitter page. On Saturday, a happy birthday message was posted to their Instagram. The PS4’s latest ranking from NPD places Sony at the top of all gaming consoles as a better selling technology than Microsoft’s XBox One.
Both the Playstation 4 and XBox One have been on sale in the U.S. and Europe for a year. Additionally, both consoles have outsold their previous versions, the PS3 and Xbox 360, in their first year. NPD Group’s Liam Callahan wrote in his press release that sales for the newer versions have gone up by 70 percent.
Comparing prices, the Playstation 4 is more expensive than the XBox One, yet has still managed to come out on top every month for almost a year. Microsoft’s sales increased when they cut prices on November 2nd. The XBox game console costs $349, and the Playstation 4 costs $399. Despite the difference in price, Sony’s Playstation 4 has been able to perform better and outsell Microsoft’s XBox technology since December of last year. Microsoft has remained silent on Sony’s better performance.
In an attempt to make the Playstation even more popular, Sony revealed Playstation Vue, a new web-based TV service set to be available in the early part of 2015. The updated console will allow live TV and on-demand content. Initially, the Playstation 4’s successor will be accessed by invite-only for beta testing with select gamers in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
Previews of the service are set to begin later this month. The Playstation Vue will offer 75 channels from major stations like CBS, NBCUniversal, and Discover communications. Following its debut, the TV service will be offered on the iPad and other devices.
While sales of gaming consoles have been up this year by almost 60 percent, games sales are down by over 25 percent. The NPD Group released its list of the top-selling games at the same time. The top-selling games for the PS4 were NBA 2K15, The Evil Within, FIFA 15, and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. Other gaming consoles on the market include the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii, but they did not top the list.
This month, Sony also released a 2.0 version of the PS4’s firmware. The update caused several problems with users having files erased and not being able to wake the console from rest mode. Sony has acknowledged the bugs caused by the update and has offered suggestions to fix the problem.
The Playstation 4 might be the better seller and able to outpace Microsoft’s XBox One, but Microsoft may come from behind and finally top next month’s list of best-selling gaming technology. The recent XBox price cut has also resulted in triple sales each week. Microsoft expects those additional sales to reflect in November’s report. For now, Playstation 4 continues to dominate the gaming industry and Sony has plans for further innovation.
