The trailer for the fifth season of the highly successful HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones premiered in numerous IMAX theaters on Thursday night and was leaked online by a moviegoer at one of the screenings yesterday morning. The trailer reveals what seems to be an absolutely epic new season of the mythical series.
HBO made an official release of the trailer shortly after it had made its way online by the leak. A great number of beloved characters fans have grown accustomed to appear in the footage as well as a handful of fresh new faces to the Game of Thrones world. The Lannister siblings, Jaime, Cersei and Tyrion, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey and Peter Dinklage, respectively, all have an abundance of screen time, showcasing much more family drama to come in season five.
Tyrion was last seen on the run from his own family, for committing patricide by killing his own father, Tywin Lannister (played by Charles Dance), who had sentenced him to death in the previous season. Tyrion is seen in the trailer in a new location after traveling in a small box for a prolonged period of time. Cersei exclaims her hatred for Tyrion to Jaime, who is also her lover in addition to her twin brother, and makes it known that their younger sibling is still alive and she wants him dead.
Tyrion states that he will not sit on the Iron Throne and rule over the entirety of Westeros, but is advised by Conleth Hill’s character, Lord Varys, that he could have part in helping someone else take control of the throne. The footage insinuates that Varys is talking about that of fan favorite Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia Clarke’s character, who they believe they should aid in claiming the throne.
Sophie Turner also returns as the fair young maiden Sansa Stark. Sansa was whisked away from the Game of Thrones capitol of Kings Landing by her family friend Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, who is played by Aiden Gillen. Littlefinger is seen in this trailer speaking to an emotional Sansa, telling her that she must avenge her family, all of whom were murdered by the likes of the Lannister family. Both of her parents and her eldest brother were all killed off in previous seasons, leaving only the youngest of the Stark clan to still remain in the series.
Arya Stark is played by Maisie Williams and is the youngest of her family and has been separated from them, believed to be dead, and on her own journey since the end of season one of Game of Thrones. Arya makes an appearance towards the end of the newly released footage, revealing her as an adolescent woman and no longer a child. She is also seen picking up a fairly large sword and appears to be examining the possibilities she could have with it.
The new Game of Thrones trailer has revealed what is anticipated to be one of the most epic seasons of the series yet. Season five of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO on April 12, 2015. The aforementioned trailer can be viewed below.
