Earlier today, it was announced that the world’s first HIV home testing kit has been released for sale, in the United Kingdom. Given that around 35 million individuals suffer from HIV/AIDS at this point in time, this kit has the potential to bring much comfort to those who are worried they may be infected with the disease.
The kit is said to be 99.7% accurate, which gives individuals the privacy and comfort they need in regards to any potential issues they may have with addressing their concerns with doctors at a hospital or clinic, and can be fully performed at home. The product was made by BioSure UK, a company which (according to their website) specializes in the provision of rapid in-vitro diagnostic testing solutions. It is said to be able to provide results in just 15 minutes, which would bring faster comfort to those who are worried rather than having to wait days or weeks for a test result from a professional.
The HIV test is selling for just under 30 UK pounds (which converts into just over $45 in United States currency), and contains a syringe as well as some other equipment. To administer the results, a single drop of blood is required via the aforementioned equipment, and after receiving this the test will begin to operate. After the approximate time limit of 15 minutes, a result will be shown informing said individual of whether they have HIV or not.
One of the most significant breakthroughs in terms of this home testing kit is the fact that it is certified by the CE (Conformité Européenne) mark, and it is the first to have this stamp of approval. The CE stamp is a required to be on certain products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA) and most significantly adds to the legitimacy of the test. This seal of approval is another reason why millions will find comfort in the recently released HIV home testing kit.
There are, however, some limitations to the product. On the company’s official website, officials have detailed a warning that the test may not be able to detect HIV infections that were contracted by the individual within 90 days prior to it being taken.
To assure users that the HIV home test is still credible, however, an additional statement is issued detailing the work and double-checking that went into the creation and testing of the product in question. Said statement reiterates the fact that it is, as of now, the only product of its kind that has been approved for sale in the United Kingdom. Individuals are still advised, however, to consult with a doctor or physician following a positive result or even if they have any doubt regarding the yes/no diagnosis.
The recently released home HIV testing kit, sold in the United States, will undoubtedly bring comfort to millions of individuals who may be concerned regarding a possible infection. The fact that the product is credited by the CE, and is the only one of its kind approved for sale, will surely bring added security to those who wish to find out their results quickly and in the privacy of their own home.
