Arizona Toddler in Critical Condition After Shooting Himself in Face

A 2-year-old boy from Arizona, who shot himself in the face on Friday is in critical, but stable condition. Apparently, his father’s handgun had been rolled up in a bundle of sheets that resembled a pillow inside the master bedroom of the house, which is where the boy had been playing at the time of the incident.

According to police, the boy’s aunt was washing dishes and his grandmother had been watching television when the gunfire had been heard coming from the bedroom. His 7-year-old brother was also in the house at the time of the incident, his father was away at work. Sergeant Shari Howard, a spokeswoman from the Peoria police department, released a statement saying that the single round fired from the handgun hit the boy’s face and went entirely through, resulting in an exit wound in the child’s head.

An ambulance took the boy to a local Arizona children’s hospital. In efforts to reduce the severe swelling caused by the bullet, part of the boy’s skull has been removed. According to Howard, the family is cooperating during the investigation process and no criminal charges have been made.
