An accidental shooting at the Clearwater Beach Marriott Suites on Sand Key hotel in Florida injured five people yesterday afternoon. The owner of the gun was injured along with four bystanders.
The gun owner, Stan Lee, 47, was a resident of Ormond Beach and had been checking in at the hotel front-desk at around 2:24 p.m. The Clearwater Police said that he was in the lobby of the hotel and had been taking out his wallet from his pant pocket to finish the formality. His hand instead grabbed the 9mm Glock and it accidentally discharged a shot.
The bullet grazed Lee’s leg before hitting the tile floor and causing shards of flooring material to hit bystanders. The shattered fragments hit Justin Kling and two young children. Kling, 42, was traveling from Leaf River, Illinois and he had his 5-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter with him. A hotel employee was also wounded.
The owner of the gun, Lee, was taken to the Morton Plant Hospital but the other injured were treated at an emergency clinic for minor injuries. Witnesses said that they rushed to the scene after they hear a gun being fired. Lee had a concealed weapons permit, but will be charged with culpable negligence because the safety was off.
