Rumors are spreading that The Vampire Diaries is ending after its sixth season, despite the CW renewing the program in January for another year. Some fans are even calling for the show to be cancelled. It all comes after Nina Dobrev announced that she would be leaving the show after the season six finale.
Fans were understandably upset that The Vampire Diaries actress was leaving. For the last six years, she has been the main female protagonist, and many fans wondered just how the show could continue. The executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries say that they have storyline ideas for season seven, but fans are not interested. It could lead to the CW deciding again over whether renewing the program was a good idea.
The CW announced in January that there were early renewals for all its eight fall shows. The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Supernatural were among those guaranteed another season, which excited many fans.
Fans have taken to social media to ask the CW to change its mind. It is not often that show fans ask for a show to end, but leaving it without a female protagonist would make it difficult. At least, that is the way that the fans believe. Supernatural does not have a female protagonist and has been going 10 years now, with an 11th in the works.
There are rumors that Elena will die in the season six finale. That idea could anger some fans, and may have them calling for The Vampire Diaries to end after season six despite it already getting a renewal. Some of the rumors also include that Damon Salvatore will start a relationship with Bonnie Bennett, angering Delena fans.
One thing to remember is that The Vampire Diaries is based on the books with the same name. While the storyline in the show took a dramatic change compared to the books, there are some similarities. In both, Elena was turned into a vampire and now in both Elena has been turned human again. Bonnie is an important part in Elena’s life and Caroline had a fling with Klaus in both show and book.
The books killed Elena off—albeit temporarily—and made Bonnie the main character for a short while. It worked for the books, and it is possible that Bonnie could become the main female protagonist for season seven. Caroline has taken a main role in the last couple of seasons, so it is also possible that she could become the main female protagonist. Steroline fans have already seen that possibility as their romance moves forward.
At least fans have had the chance to say goodbye to the character. Dobrev announced to fans last month that she was leaving, giving them a month to prepare for the season finale. Most fans will not be as angry with The Vampire Diaries as Grey’s Anatomy fans have been recently when Derek Shepherd was killed in a shock decision. However, that does not mean a seventh season will be successful. While it is unlikely the CW will cancel its decision to renew The Vampire Diaries, season six could be the last for many fans as they decide it is no longer worth watching.
