Disney has officially stated a May 24, 2019, release date for its final Star Wars movie in the current trilogy, as publicized on April 26, 2017. The announcement for “Star Wars: Episode IX” has come ahead of the distribution of the second movie in the trilogy, “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi,” slated for release in the U.K. and U.S. on Dec. 15.
The last film in the trilogy is said to be the only one not to have a December release date. The, yet to be named, “Star Wars: Episode IX,” is being written by Derek Connolly and directed by Colin Trevorrow. This will be the movie finale of the most current trilogy in the Star Wars franchise, that began in 2015 with “The Force Awakens.”
Leia Hinted to Not Be in Final Star Wars Film
Following the death of Carrie Fisher, talk has been circulating about possibly digitally recreating Leia. Lucasfilm has issued a statement implying that “Star Wars: Episode IX” will not have a digitized Leia:
She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honour everything she gave to Star Wars.
Luckily for her fans, followers, and producers, Fisher had finished filming her larger role in the upcoming “Episode VIII: The Last Jedi,” before her death. Her daughter, Billie Lourd, who was in “The Force Awakens,” is said to be in the “The Last Jedi” as well. With the anticipation of Fisher to appear in the final movie in the current trilogy, fans are questioning how her passing will be addressed.
New Female Hero to Be Introduced in ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi’
A new female hero is set to be introduced in the second installment of the current trilogy. In the same vein as Leia’s inspirational strong role, Rose is set to emerge as a prominent character. Rose, as a member of the maintenance crew for the Resistance, will prove to females viewing that they can do anything that their male counterparts can do. Director Rian Johnson notes that the charm of the character is that she is just a normal working person, who ends up being a hero:
The notion that anyone out there, any of us, can step up and turn into a hero, that’s really where the character of Rose comes from.
Rose is said to end up being paired on a quest with Finn. Finn is the former Stormtrooper, FN-2187, who flees the First Order to join the Resistance in “The Force Awakens.” Rose will join the other recent strong female lead, Rey. She was first introduced in “The Force Awakens,” as a young adult scavenger. She showed to be as valiant and headstrong as Leia in standing up for her values and integrity.
With the showing of Jedi skills, Star Wars fans are theorizing who Rey’s parents are, with some believing she is Luke Skywalker’s daughter, and others thinking she is the daughter of Leia and Han Solo. It has been noted that her connection with the light saber that Skywalker used, suggests that he is her father. The first movie in the current trilogy shows that the character Rey is a huge factor in what awakens the force.
