LegrandAccording to his spokesperson, Michel Legrand the Oscar-winning French film composer died in Paris, France on Jan. 26, 2019. He was 86 years old.

He was born on Feb. 24, 1932, in Paris, France. Legrand was considered a prodigy, and when he was 10 years old, he became a student at the Paris Conservatory of Music.

In 1968 his song “The Windmills Of Your Mind” from “The Thomas Crown Affair” movie won an Oscar for Best Original Song. The song was covered by Dusty Springfield and released on her debut album from Atlantic Records.

The composer would go on to win two more Academy Awards for scores he composed. In 1972 he won for “Summer of 42” and in 1984  for the movie “Yentl” starring Barbra Streisand.

Legrand also was nominated for 17 Grammy Awards, winning five, and he was responsible for more than 200 television and film scores.

The Frenchman will forever be known for his classic works with fellow Frenchman, filmmaker Jacques Demy on his musicals  “Donkey Skin,” “Girls of Rochefort” and “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.”

Legrand was booked for multiple concerts in Paris this April. He is survived by his wife Macha Meril and three children.
